Lots of companies can say they care about work/life balance, but do they? Do they really? Sure, working from home on a Friday, is a nice “balance.” “Flexible time frames in which your 40 hours are completed” … great! But is this what work/life balance is, at its core? My friend recently suffered the tragic and unexpected loss of her 7-year-old daughter recently. Last week, I decided to make the trip to see her, very last-minute. There was no long-term planning in place. I just knew I needed to go, and I need to go like at that minute. I had at least a 6-7 hour drive ahead of me. I booked a hotel, left my office, and texted my boss to give me a ring when she was out of her meeting. I did not ask for permission … not as a sign of disrespect. Rather, I know the type of person my boss is. She cares about people, like truly cares about people. And I knew she would understand. Dianne gave me a ring as I was throwing stuff in a suitcase, and her response was “of course.” And “drive safely.” It was not: “Well what about our clients?” (Because of course she knows I wouldn’t leave clients hanging, but also, she understands when life comes first.) She encouraged me to get up there and to be flexible to what my friend needed, even if that meant shuffling work. While driving up on Wednesday night, she checked in along the way to make sure I was ok/the drive was going well. This is support you can’t “buy.” This is what work/life balance really is. I did not have to stress, in that moment, about what this would mean for my employment if I were to just leave on a whim, and I really left on a whim. That is “balance” you don’t get just anywhere. You have to have employers/bosses who really care enough about their folks to support them in and out of the office. Life can be so hard, so cruel and so unfair. Grief like this, suffocating. And it can also be filled with the helpers … who, even in what can feel like the absolute darkest of times, don’t make it harder — but give you the space you need to go and do what is so important. That is irreplaceable. I’m so grateful to Dianne McKay for the gift she gave me of this time with my friend last week.

In today's hyper-connected world, the line between work and leisure is increasingly blurred. Many professionals feel compelled to bring work along on their vacations, fearing the consequences of disconnecting. 📱 But is this practice sustainable, or even healthy? We must not normalize the expectation that employees should remain available and productive while on vacation. 🌴 The reality is that the pressure to work during personal time off leads to significant stress. The fear of losing a job, disappointing clients, or failing to support a team weighs heavily on many. This constant connection erodes the very purpose of a vacation: to relax, recharge, and return to work refreshed. Instead, it perpetuates a cycle of burnout and diminished well-being. 💼 Employers and employees alike must prioritize clear boundaries between work and personal time. Encouraging true time off is essential for mental health and long-term productivity. Let’s redefine success not by constant availability but by the quality of our work and the fullness of our lives. 🚫 It's time to reclaim our vacations and resist the pressure to stay plugged in. After all, a well-rested mind is a more creative and productive one. Let's champion a culture where time off is respected and necessary for success. #WorkLifeBalance #MentalHealthMatters #VacationShouldBeVacation #UnplugAndRecharge #BurnoutPrevention #HealthyBoundaries #WorkFreeVacation #DigitalDetox #StressRelief #SelfCare #DisconnectToReconnect #MindfulLiving #WorkFromHomeStruggles #RemoteWorkReality #JobSecurity #ClientExpectations #TeamSupport #EmployeeWellbeing #TimeOffMatters #ProductivityTips #WorkCulture #VacationMode #MentalWellness #RestAndRecharge #PrioritizeSelfCare
