This December, the UN Convention to Combat Desertification's COP16 brought together world leaders to discuss #desertification, #landdegradation and #drought, all of which have detrimental impacts on #planetarysecurity. 🚱 🌳 Many #landrestoration initiatives focus on forest cover. The UN and other prominent organisations in the field define forests as areas with more than 10% tree cover. However, many non-forest ecosystems that are dotted with trees also fall under this category and risk being targeted by reforestation efforts, causing the loss of #ecosystemservices. ❗ Land restoration will be critical to achieve #climatesecurity, but the forest-centric vision of land restoration must be revised. Amid the launch of Saudi Arabia's #REMDY project at UNCCD COP16 – which uses #AI to monitor land health – special attention should also be paid to the capabilities and potential limitations of digital technologies and smart systems in assessing land health. We're thrilled to share that LBA participated in the #UNCCD #COP16 in Riyadh, under the Saudi Presidency. As the largest UN land conference to date, COP16 brought together over 20,000 delegates, global leaders of private companies and civil society organizations, and experts, to tackle the critical challenges of desertification, land degradation, and drought (#DLDD). The 2-week conference focused on boosting drought preparedness and resilience, ensuring land continues to provide climate and biodiversity solutions, enabling more equal land tenure, and limiting the negative impacts of #DLDD on the most vulnerable populations. The negotiations led to agreement on 39 decisions despite a tense geopolitical context, while the Riyadh Global Drought Resilience Partnership received initial pledges of USD$12 billion, demonstrating a significant commitment to supporting vulnerable and drought-hit countries. #Committedtodeliver Clément Lamy Floriane Benichou

🌍 UNCCD COP16: Progress in the Fight Against Desertification 🌍 Last week, UNCCD COP16 concluded in Riyadh, the first COP in the MENA region. While a global framework to combat desertification remains elusive, the summit made strides: 💡 €11.5 billion pledged to the Global Drought Resilience Partnership, aiding 80 vulnerable countries. 💡 Emphasis on local communities in restoration aligns with Lignaverda’s mission. 💡 Call for greater private sector engagement—an area where Lignaverda leads through corporate partnerships supporting SDG13 & SDG15. With 5,924 hectares restored so far, we’re ready to build on this momentum at COP17 in Mongolia (2026). #UNCCD #COP16 #Sustainability #ClimateAction #Reforestation https://lnkd.in/gCpZUSVG

Here's a summary of COP16 Riyadh so far: COP16, which kicked off on December 2, 2024, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, is a crucial milestone in the global fight against desertification, land degradation, and drought.¹ The conference, which will run until December 13, 2024, has brought together over 197 parties, including 196 countries and the European Union. The conference is themed "Our Land. Our Future" and is expected to be a game-changer in accelerating global efforts to restore land and boost drought resilience. COP16 is also significant as it coincides with the 30th anniversary of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD). Some of the key focus areas of COP16 include: - Land Restoration: Restoring degraded lands to improve biodiversity, reduce poverty, and mitigate climate change. - Drought Resilience: Building resilience to droughts to protect livelihoods, ecosystems, and economies. - Sustainable Land Management: Promoting sustainable land management practices to reduce land degradation and improve land productivity. The conference has also seen the introduction of a dual approach, featuring a Negotiation Track and an Action Agenda, aimed at achieving bold outcomes in formal negotiations and facilitating the implementation of COP decisions. Overall, COP16 Riyadh is poised to make significant strides in addressing the pressing issues of desertification, land degradation, and drought, and in promoting sustainable land management practices globally.

Drought and desertification are increasingly becoming a challenge, hampering sustainable innovation and growth. Earlier this month, Deltares experts Audrey Legat and Patricia Trambauer, PhD attended #COP16, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. COP16 saw the launch of the Riyadh Action Agenda, a global initiative to mobilise commitments and action from governments and non-state actors to conserve and restore 1.5 billion hectares of land by 2030. Deltares supported the process and provided input into the action area focussed on enhancing drought resilience through water system reliance. Our experts also facilitated multistakeholder dialogues on drought and water resilience, and on science and resilience. Although the Riyadh Action Agenda is ambitious in its goals, it’s clear much needs to be done. That’s why Deltares calls for: 💧 The inclusion of water in the discussions. Until now, water has mostly been absent from these discussions. At Deltares, we believe that water and drought are two sides of the same coin and cannot be viewed separately from one another. Furthermore, given the clear link between water and security, including it in discussions on desertification is even more vital. 🤝 Closer alignment between the Rio Trio Conventions (and not to forget, the Wetlands Convention). Everyone has heard of the COP on climate change, but the COP on biodiversity and the COP on desertification are equally important. Although the Conventions have separate gatherings, water brings opportunity to connect them. We look forward to working with our partners to tackle the challenges caused by drought and desertification! #EnablingDeltaLife #drought #desertification #RiyadhActionAgenda

Today we celebrate World Environment Day (WED). For over five decades, under the aegis of the UN Environment Programme, WED has grown to serve as an important global platform for environmental outreach. Each year, on 05 June, the WED is hosted by a different country with the objective of encouraging awareness and action for the protection of the environment. This year the event is being hosted by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in Riyadh and the focus is on land restoration, prevention of desertification, and drought resilience. Restoring land goes hand-in-hand with tackling climate change. Climate change and global warming are the result of burning fossil fuels for industry, electricity generation and transportation, and large-scale deforestation, over more than a century and half since the industrial revolution. At Altigreen, every day is a celebration of the environment. Our popular commercial electric three-wheelers are not only pollution-free but also offer our customers much better value compared to their ICE counterparts. As individuals, communities, businesses, and countries we must do our very best to make the world a better place not just for humans, but also for animals and plants. We owe it to our future generations. #WorldEnvironmentDay #GenerationRestoration #ElectricVehicles #SustainableMobility UN Environment Programme
