Celebrating International Forest Day! Forests are essential not only for our planet's health but also for the well-being of local communities. On this #forestday, we explore the concept of community-led governance and its important role in ensuring the sustainability of our forests and the prosperity of those who rely on them. Community-led governance means empowering local communities to have a say in the management of their landscapes through strong governance structures. At Planet Indonesia, we are committed to supporting communities in establishing Conservation Cooperatives (CCs), which enable them to efficiently manage their resources and enhance human well-being. But it's more than just managing forests; it's about governance. We believe that transparent, participatory, and adaptive governance institutions are essential for long-term success in conservation and community development. Stay tuned for our next post as we continue to explore this important topic. #ForestInternationalDay #forestday

While we were in Indonesia, we had several conversations with groups interested in preserving and extending the country’s unmatched old growth forests. Indonesia has almost a million square kilometers of dense forest, which also houses many kinds of fauna, as well as rare flora, many of which can only be discovered in these biodiversity hotspots. These forests are under threat from extractive industries like mining, logging and plantation agriculture. But they are frequently also threatened by the very communities who have their lives and livelihood in the shadow of the forest. While these communities may sometimes still be hunter-gatherers, they have increasingly turned to agriculture and they have carved their farmlands out of the cinders of forest lands they have intentionally burned. In the Southwest forested region of the island of Bali, for instance, we encounter a local practice known as ngawen, which means to place a sign or mark of ownership upon the land. This involves planting crops like vanilla, banana or local flowers within the forest lands to signal private claims that can later be given the force of law. On the other hand, if the forest is to be protected, these same forest adjacent communities will be its closest and most powerful protectors, while also possibly benefitting the most from the forest’s preservation. The allocation of forest lands to community stewardship is one possible route, and this has been attempted in Bali, as well as in several other provinces of the country. A more sophisticated approach, perhaps, would be to try and understand the local practices of privatization through ngawen or otherwise, and to explore ways in which those claims can be transformed into collective stewardship which nevertheless gives economic and food security to the individual families that make up the larger tribal group adjacent to the forest. We had exploratory conversations along these lines with Yayasan Plan International Indonesia. We thought about leveraging their existing youth ambassadors as climate activists for community engagement and sustenance as one path forward. We would also need an actionable plan for community management of forest resources so as to ensure that the preservation of the forest is also economically valuable for the community as a whole.

What does the Sumatran Orangutan Society actually do? 🤔 It’s a question I hear often — mention SOS and people immediately think "orangutans!" And while that’s true, our mission goes far beyond. At SOS, we are driven by the vital work of protecting, connecting, and rewilding landscapes in North Sumatra, Indonesia. Protecting orangutans means more than just saving the species — it’s about safeguarding their rainforest homes, which are crucial for biodiversity and climate resilience. Our work extends to connecting fragmented habitats, creating safe corridors for wildlife to thrive, and rewilding degraded lands, bringing nature back to life. But here’s the thing... this work isn’t possible without the support of visionary partners in the business community. As an organisation, we believe in the power of collaboration. Businesses can make a direct impact by: 🌱 Supporting restoration efforts through sponsorships 🌱 Partnering with us on sustainable initiatives 🌱 Promoting our cause within their networks We’re excited to share our Conservation Greenprint, a film voiced by Bill Bailey, outlining our strategy and vision for the future. This video will walk you through how SOS is making a tangible difference and how your business can be part of this journey. If you're passionate about protecting our planet’s most critical ecosystems, we’d love to discuss how we can work together. 🌏🦧 #Rewilding #Conservation #Sustainability #CorporateResponsibility #PartnershipForChange

💚 ... This made my day a little bit greener! A resilient Red Mangrove dedicated to me by TreebuddyEarth is now thriving in the Natuna Islands, Indonesia. This unique Treebuddy symbolizes my commitment to the environment, with ongoing support crucial for the next five years. Marked on the world map, my mangrove's growth will be documented, offering special updates with images charting its journey. Beyond five years, I have the option to extend my guardianship, ensuring continued care and preservation. More than a tree, my mangrove plays a vital role in climate resilience and biodiversity, serving as a sanctuary for the rare and endangered Kekah Natuna primate. My contribution significantly contributes to safeguarding this unique species. Partnering with the Natuna community, TreebuddyEarth's innovative trees-as-a-service model ensures verifiability, community engagement, and long-term stewardship. For natural capital markets and models to have the best chance of succeeding, they need to be co-designed with the people living and working in these landscapes. This is, in part, because nature is highly localised. Two forests in Ecuador won’t house the same species, let alone a forest in Ecuador and a forest in Indonesia. Local knowledge has the potential to make or break the success of a market or model. It’s also because land can only be truly protected when those who walk it are invested in its future. “There's a big push to asset-ise and value nature, but Indigenous peoples and local communities are not consulted enough," says Bloom Labs Founder Simas Gradeckas. “Even though meaningful consultation might mean the biodiversity market starts off slower, or never becomes as large, it needs to start with Indigenous peoples and local communities front and centre. This doesn't mean just talking about them, it means having them co-design the schemes or choose to boycott the market.” Keep reading: https://buff.ly/3JcHy3e #naturemarket #biodiversitycredit

Nothing can replace the mother trees being cut down in Bali. But let us give you a little bit of hope... In the next two weeks, we have scheduled to plant three forests, totaling 1,600 native trees. We are hopeful that within our lifetime, we will see these forests grow their own mother trees. And we are starting with this public school! We are planting Miyawaki forest with the students of SMP Negeri13. We hope this small action can ignite a spark in their hearts to connect with mother nature. Making it so that when they are older, they will protect the new mother trees that they helped plant. #naturebasedsolutions #climateaction #sustainability #reforestation
