With 1 in 9 species at risk of extinction in Scotland, we welcome the new long term plan for nature recovery from The Scottish Government 🌿 We are pleased to see a commitment to introduce statutory nature restoration targets, proposal of actions to recover threatened species and intention to publish the Scottish Plant Biodiversity Strategy 🌍 Unfortunately, targeted action for our valuable species-rich grasslands is distinctly missing 🌱 The framework is a positive step forward in many ways, but there is still work to be done and urgent action is needed now 📢 Read our full statement from Alistair Whyte, Head of Plantlife Scotland 👉 https://lnkd.in/e6aspy68 #Scotland #ScottishPolicy #Policy #Biodiversity #ClimateChange #SpeciesRecovery #Conservation #PlantConservation #ActionNow #Grasslands #Rainforests #TemperateRainforests #ScotlandsRainforests

An important audit!
The Auditor-General for New South Wales, Bola Oyetunji, has tabled in NSW Parliament a report titled ‘Threatened species and ecological communities’. This audit assessed whether the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water has effectively delivered outcomes to support threatened species and ecological communities across New South Wales, including delivery of the statutory Biodiversity Conservation Program (Saving our Species). The announcement of the Scottish Biodiversity Strategy Framework from The Scottish Government is approaching! ⏰ Here is what we hope to see 👇 1️⃣ It must be ambitious and transformational. The framework needs to clearly set out the key steps needed to reverse nature loss by 2045 and have legally binding targets. 2️⃣ Scotland is home to internationally important temperate #rainforest & valuable species-rich #grasslands. We need a comprehensive programme of ecosystem restoration, with new actions to amplify progress at pace, particularly for the above habitats. 3️⃣ 1 in 9 species in Scotland are under threat of extinction. We urgently need a comprehensive programme of species recovery, which includes targeted action for the most vulnerable species. 📢 The Scottish Government has the opportunity to implement lasting and positive change for our natural world in the new Scottish Biodiversity Framework. While we wait for the announcement, find out more about our work in Scotland 🫱 https://lnkd.in/e7CB2DyQ #Scotland #ScottishPolicy #ScottishBiodiversity #ScotlandsRainforests

Inland waters protections are a key part of halting nature and biodiversity loss. Led by The Nature Conservancy in partnership with WWF, IUCN Species Survival Commission, and Equilibrium Research with contributions from dozens of experts, the IUCN’s World Commission on Protected Areas has published its first-ever guidance focused on inland waters. The report features inland waters success stories from around the world. It provides guidance on how we can effectively apply area-based conservation to these systems, using examples such as community-led efforts in the Balkans. Revelations about a leaked B.C. Ministry of Forests old-growth map showing that more than half of the most endangered forests recommended for deferrals three years ago remain open to logging are disturbing. Recent provincial conservation announcements like the tripartite Nature Agreement contain all ingredients for safeguarding the most at-risk old growth. But they have not led to tangible change on the ground. Amid the intensifying climate and biodiversity crisis, we can’t afford a provincial government acting with one hand to increase conservation and with the other to undermine progress. All levels of government must speed up solutions to protect these values before we lose what little is left. #Mangrove ecosystems are critical for food, livelihoods, biodiversity, and climate. Join us next week at #COP29 at an event that will highlight how including mangrove-positive targets in countries' Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) can be an important catalyst to mobilize action and finance for mangrove conservation and restoration, and further enhance mitigation contributions. Through a moderated panel discussion composed of diverse mangrove stakeholders, attendees will learn about new and ongoing initiatives to implement and mobilize mangrove-climate action and finance. Wetlands are critical for biodiversity. This value needs to be fully recognised so that wetlands receive the support they need. As countries gather for the Convention on Biological Diversity #CoP16, wetlands must be fully integrated into National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs). Join Convention on Wetlands colleagues on Monday to explore ways to do this.
Join us at our official side event at #COP16Colombia where we will: 1. Present findings of an assessment of wetlands in submitted NBSAPs 2. Showcase examples of wetland restoration and conservation from France and Zambia 3. Share best practices and practical guidance for designing and delivering wetland action through NBSAPs Convention on Wetlands UN Biodiversity BirdLife International Global Youth Biodiversity Network The Nature Conservancy

Australia has one of the highest rates of species extinction in the world, and Western Australia is a significant contributor to this troubling statistic. With iconic species like the Western Swamp Tortoise and Gilbert's Potoroo critically endangered, it's clear that our current environmental protections aren't sufficient. The ongoing reforms to the EPBC Act aim to address these failings, but will they be enough? As climate change accelerates and biodiversity declines, these reforms offer a critical opportunity to strengthen our conservation efforts. But the real question remains: Can they reverse the damage already done? The stakes are high, and the urgency to act is now. Read more about the EPBC Act reforms and what they mean for Australia’s future. https://hubs.ly/Q02M-Mf90 #biodiversitymonth
