We’re thrilled to be developing the first grassland-specific toolkit to help farmers protect and restore more species-rich grasslands! 🌱Species-rich grasslands can deliver enormous benefits for wildlife, biodiversity and the climate. 🌸With approximately 97% of the UK’s species-rich grassland lost in less than a century, we are working with farmers to protect and restore them. Supporting smaller farms, with fewer resources, is a great opportunity to support food production and the restoration of grassland - and help farmers access alternative forms of finance 🌿 We are creating a toolkit with funding from the Natural Environment Investment Readiness Fund (NEIRF) to complete the ‘Realising grassland potential: an ecosystems services toolkit for farmers’ project. And thanks to partners - Floodplain Meadows Partnership, National Landscapes Association, Pasture for Life & Finance Earth Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Environment Agency Natural England Read more here - https://lnkd.in/gcNmVVq3

The UK is one of the most nature depleted countries on the planet. What are we going to do about it? Well, we can't fix it without farmers. Over 70% of the UK's land is under the management of farmers - any attempt to restore nature cannot and will not work without farmers at the centre of the debate. That's why Gascoyne Estates was pleased to convene a meeting of Hertfordshire farmers and land managers today, alongside The CLA. We explored: 🚜 The value of farmer clusters in sharing knowledge and working on local priorities 🌿 Opportunities to attract investment to enhance biodiversity with the Environmental Farmers Group's innovative model which keeps value with those who create it 🤝 Working across boundaries to access Landscape Recovery to achieve impact at scale ✒ Engaging with the Local Nature Recovery Strategy, providing real world expertise and practical understanding to the process. Farming has been part of the problem. But farmers are - and want to be - part of the solution. Watch this space! Lynne Ceeney Marc G. Wilcox PhD Anthony Downs Ellie Chappell Jo Smith Oliver Hauxwell

Private finance for forest and landscape restoration faces a complex interplay of incentives and barriers. On the incentive side, potential economic returns from sustainable forestry, carbon credits, and payments for ecosystem services, alongside corporate social responsibility benefits and regulatory incentives, make restoration projects attractive to private investors. Innovative financial instruments and public-private partnerships further bolster the case for investment. However, barriers such as high initial costs, long payback periods, perceived risks, unclear legal frameworks, underdeveloped markets for ecosystem services, and operational challenges deter private finance. Addressing these barriers through policy reforms, market development, and capacity building is crucial to leverage private investment for sustainable restoration efforts that are vital for biodiversity, climate change mitigation, and sustainable development.

Once a thriving expanse of life and livelihoods, #LakeChad now embodies a tragic narrative of environmental damage, with its surface reduced by a shocking 90% since the mid-20th century. #Climatechange, unsustainable water usage, and regional conflicts converge to drain this vital reservoir, disrupting ecosystems and endangering millions dependent on its bounty. Yet amidst the bleakness, signs of resilience surface as local communities innovate, embracing drought-resistant crops, efficient #irrigation, and restorative #agroforestry. Their struggle shines as a symbol of hope, reminding us that with unified action and adaptive resolve, we can still salvage the fading embers of this ecological treasure. Yesterday's approval of the EU's Nature Restoration Law is a landmark moment for environmental recovery. By setting ambitious targets to restore at least 20% of the EU's land and sea areas by 2030, and all ecosystems in need by 2050, the law provides a clear and actionable framework for environmental recovery. "It's great that this has finally come to fruition. It's an important step in the fight against biodiversity loss and climate change." says Lisa Wiatschka, innovation consultant for Wetlands, Agriculture and Climate Change. "It aligns with our mission to foster sustainable innovation and support projects that deliver tangible environmental and economic benefits." The projected return on investment—between €4 and €38 for every euro spent—highlights the significant positive impact that well-planned restoration can achieve. Passing this law represents a critical victory for environmental policy in the EU, overcoming significant opposition and demonstrating a strong commitment to addressing the urgent challenges of our time. We look forward to continuing our work in this field and collaborating with stakeholders to implement and exceed these targets.
