Xampla, a Cambridge-based #cleantech business, has raised $7 million (£5.5 million) to promote its plant-based, #biodegradable substance designed to replace plastic. The startup's purpose is to eradicate the use of plastic by replacing it with 'Morro', a patented material that the #business says can degrade swiftly and completely without emitting any #hazardous pollutants. Morro was developed by Xampla after 15 years of research at the University of #cambridge, and it is aimed at #brands aiming to limit their use of plastic. "This investment is a #testament to the shared commitment of our backers, who can see that Xampla products are the gateway to a new era in materials sustainability," stated Alexandra French, president and #chiefexecutiveofficer of Xampla "This new #funding will help the growth of our Morro material into new countries and applications, allowing us to have a significant impact. "We are determined to lead the way towards a future where #naturalmaterials thrive, and traditional plastics become a thing of the past." CIECH Ventures participated in the #investment round, as did prior backers Amadeus Capital Partners, Horizon Ventures, Cambridge Angels, Cambridge Enterprise, and Martlet Capital. "Xampla's #innovativeapproach and impact on the industry are deeply aligned with the values of CIECH Ventures," stated Szymon Smyk, CIECH Ventures CEO. "Cleantech solutions capable of addressing real-world problems, such as #plasticpollution, and promoting #sustainabledevelopment are of particular interest to us."
