The Business Coalition for a Global Plastics Treaty (representing over 250 businesses, financial institutions, and NGOs) has signed the 'Bridge to Busan Declaration on Primary Plastic Polymers' to stress the need for an internationally legally binding instrument that addresses the full life-cycle of plastics. 📈 Today, we talk about trends in plastic packaging. ♻ The US Plastics Pact, launched in August 2020, is the first in North America, led by The Recycling Partnership and supported by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). The members aim to: 1️⃣ Identify and eliminate problematic or unnecessary plastic packaging by 2025. 2️⃣ Ensure all plastic packaging is 100% reusable, recyclable, or compostable by 2025. 3️⃣ Achieve a 50% recycling or composting rate for plastic packaging by 2025. 4️⃣ Increase the average recycled or responsibly sourced bio-based content to 30% by 2025. ⌛ The US Plastics Pact has published its latest Roadmap 2.0 action plan for manufacturers to change the way how plastic packaging is reused, recycled, and composted. #SustainablePlastics are becoming popular over concerns about how regular plastics harm the environment. These eco-friendly plastics, which can be made from plants, break down naturally, can be composted, recycled or net-zero emissions plastics, seem promising. But there's no silver bullet to address the plastic crisis. Figuring out how to mass produce green plastics cheaply so they can compete with regular plastics is crucial. Even though some progress has been made, like encouraging recycling and banning single-use plastics, there isn't enough support for new plant-based alternatives.  There’s a need to invest in alternatives, rethink plastic policies and reduce demand for fossil plastics.  #PlasticFreeJuly Jose Espí is a PhD student at the University of Oxford’s The Institute for New Economic Thinking at the Oxford Martin School. Jose’s research focuses on applying state-of-the-art techniques to forecast the costs of emerging biopolymer technologies and identifying sensitive points within the petrochemical industry where small interventions can catalyse the transition to zero-impact plastics. Jose is also the CEO & Co-Founder of BZERO Materials, focusing on innovative solutions to replace fossil plastics.

🌍 According to 'Plastics – the fast Facts 2023' report, circular plastics production hit a record high in 2022, reaching 37.8 million tonnes globally. This represents a 9.5% share of the total global plastics production of 400.3 million tonnes. 🔄 In Europe, circular plastics account for 19.5% of total plastics production, double the global average. Despite challenging market conditions, the shift towards a circular economy with plastics is evident. 💡 Ingemar Bühler, CEO of Plastics Europe Deutschland (PED), emphasizes the need for political support to accelerate this transition, citing the importance of national and EU policies like the circular economy strategy and packaging regulations. 🔍 There is an urgent need for government action to incentivize environmentally friendly technologies and promote circular plastics usage.
