Eurozone I was under the impression that the economies of the Eurozone countries were doing quite well till Fareed Zakaria opened my eyes last night. He said: 1.  In 2008 the US economy was the same size with the Eurozone economy. Today the US economy is twice as big! 2.  If the UK became the 51st US State, it would be the poorest state compared to the other 50 states. Poorer than Mississippi!! #politics #NobelPrize Kaushik Basu, Professor of Economics, Cornell University, former Chief Economist of the World Bank and Chief Economic Adviser, Government of India posted his 2023 published paper on dictators on X https://lnkd.in/eum9hicW. He argues dictators, even those who initially seize power with the intent of benefiting their nation, often transform into tyrants over time, citing a few recent examples. Several factors, he says, may contribute to this transformation. This paper explores one particularly compelling and widespread driver behind the shift. A model is developed to illustrate how the series of decisions an authoritarian leader makes—regarding the extent of political manipulation and wrongdoing necessary to maintain control—creates a dynamic inconsistency, ultimately turning the leader into a tyrant. While the dictator may later regret this path, by that point, they are left with no viable way out. The analysis highlights the importance of considering preemptive measures, such as ex ante rules and term limits, to prevent this outcome. Basu’s analysis, albeit using analytical approaches he knows best in neoclassical economics, is not new, but intellectually inadequate and shallow. Read ...
