I receive many requests daily regarding the properties of glazing systems in minimalist houses that provide sustainable living conditions. The issue with most minimalist houses is that they tend to allow excess heat in the summer and excess cold in the winter. Additionally, they often permit large amounts of solar heat gain and, in many cases, feature thick glazing that detracts from the aesthetic appeal. Therefore, we need the glazing system to: -Provide better insulation (both acoustic and thermal) -Reduce solar heat gain in the summer -Retain indoor warmth in the winter -Ensure efficient heat transfer Now, here’s the good news... Minimalist houses are ideal candidates for modular construction, as this approach reduces costs, speeds up the building process, and eliminates dependence on weather conditions. WHAT ARE PASSIVE DESIGN PRINCIPLES WHEN IT COMES TO ENERGY EFFICIENT HOMES? In our ongoing commitment to providing valuable insights to answer the question, what is an energy efficient home? We continue today with looking at what is passive design? Passive design principles can best be described as using the natural environment to reduce the energy demand of a building. Namely, using ambient energy sources, instead of purchased energy, such as fossil fuels, electricity or natural gas. Examples of passive design when it comes to housing, include maximising daylight to light rooms rather than requiring artificial lighting powered by electricity. Another example would be capturing solar gain to heat spaces to reduce heating demand and designing openings so buildings can be cross-ventilated to reduce cooling requirements. Blame it solely on climate and the environment or have we been collaborating with nature to cook us all along? If you've been in #Nigeria in the last week, you would have experienced like never before a sudden HEATWAVE (increase in the overall atmospheric temperature), especially in the southern & eastern states, and some parts of the west. Many individuals casually associate this increase in temperature to ozone layer depletion and #climatechange (and not that any of these are false). But as an architectural designer, it has brought some questions to my mind; - Could it be that we have unintentionally designed our #builtenvironment for low tolerance to increasing temperatures? - Could it be that our present day building’s #interiors & exterior environments were designed to not cope with slight increases in environmental temperature? - What of urban heat island effect (cities trapping heat), and the role of #trees and greenery in our everyday built environment, our homes and interior spaces? - How about introducing the terms and concepts of #insulation, double glazing and efficient ventilation into the design and #construction of low density and high density residential areas in our #environment. - How about upgrading and stopping the use of old and outdated windows, doors and other building components for #design and construction of modern day buildings, which struggle with modern day challenges. The #future can be bright doesn't necessarily mean it has to be hot, it can also be comfortable if we plan for it. Not necessarily! Enhancing the energy efficiency of century-old houses, even those with solid walls or timber frames, is entirely feasible. Solutions like insulation, upgraded windows, and doors, coupled with reduced air infiltration, can remarkably boost their performance. However, tread carefully with historic buildings – seek necessary permissions before any alterations. Older constructions often possess a breathable nature, allowing moisture to pass through and preventing dampness. Altering this balance may trap moisture, risking structural damage. Hence, it's crucial to assess the existing structure and opt for breathable insulation and finishes. Revamping windows and doors in heritage properties can significantly enhance their environmental footprint. For properties in conservation areas or listed buildings, sensitive options exist for replacements that blend modern performance with traditional aesthetics.
