Well, the secret is out … excited to finally be able to share more about some of the biggest (and most sustainable) self-driving robotics initiatives I’ve ever worked with or been a part of. Proud to introduce the self-driving, battery electric semi-truck by Daimler Truck North America. This is a huge milestone for the entire Autonomous Technology Group team and an even bigger step forward for society. Why is this a big deal? Here’s what I’ve learned about this space and use-case in case it’s interesting to you. Heavy-duty (eg., semi) vehicles, while only 10% of vehicles on the road, generate over 25% of global warming emissions according to UCSUSA. With Daimler Truck's 40% market share in Class 8 trucks, the shift to electric could make a substantial difference by helping to lowere then general global emissions contributed by these vehicles. OK… so why haven’t flyers just battery electric? Switching to zero emission vehicles sounds easy, but hasn’t been… this is where autonomous electric gets interesting. Battery electric trucks have faced go to market challenges like higher costs and infrastructure readiness limitations, but the autonomous electric solution addresses these challenges head on. The battery electric power not only helps lower emissions, but the autonomy also addresses rising labor shortages and costs, reducing overall truck ownership costs and making new tech adoption more practical.
