KFM have recently received planning consent for this new social center for the Tring community. The low carbon building will be constructed from CLT timber, earth ‘Strock’ blocks from local brickmakers H G Matthews and flint. Flint is a ubiquitous traditional Chiltern material cleared from local fields. Gabion walls, reminiscent of English walled gardens will provide habitats for flora and fauna and ‘Sitooteries’ will provide sheltered resting place for visitors to the park. Apart from the sense of inclusion and complete accessibility the single floor circular form also provides a 30% reduction in external cladding area when compared to the ubiquitous rectilinear forms. ADAPTIVE URBANISM (AND BRUTALIST ARCHITECTURE) De Bunkertoren in Eindhoven – I have passed by this building so many times when I was going to the main train station or to my favorite coffee spot, but I always just admired its architectural form, which crowns the intersection of Vincent van Den Heuvellaan and John F. Kennedylaan. I imagined it not only as a kind of gate tower at the entrance to the center but also as part of the modernist structure of the TU/e university campus, situated on the other side of the picturesque valley of the Dommel River, flowing through the entire city. And indeed, that is how this object was designed! Hugh Maaskant, the famous Dutch architect responsible for the original shape of Benthemplein in Rotterdam (I wrote about this place yesterday), was hired to prepare the project of the brutalist Student Center De Bunker in Eindhoven. This design icon still exists, as you can see in the attached photo. The pavilion from 1969 serves as the compositional base for the residential block built above it between 2015 and 2022. As part of the expansion, the parking lot surrounding the former student center was removed, and a green area was created. Today, I stroll along the paths and once again admire the idea of managing rainwater – in this case, it is not any architectural construction, but a basin formed from earth masses that temporarily fill with water. In my opinion, the technical simplicity and landscape beauty of this solution are worth noting. #urbanism #climatechange #urbandesign #brutalistarchitecture
