What Makes Work Meaningful? by Dr. Evgenia Lysova, Dr Luke Fletcher, and Dr. Sabrine El Baroudi We all search for meaning in our lives, and many of us find it through our work. In fact, research shows that meaningfulness is more important to us than any other aspect of our jobs — including pay and rewards, opportunities for promotion, and working conditions. When we experience our work as meaningful, we’re more engaged, committed, and satisfied. When we don’t, we’re more willing to quit, and this is especially true for younger workers. A part of the solution involves leaders at the top of their organizations. There are several ways people in positions of power can create conditions that foster more meaningfulness at work. Do you need time away from the day-to-day job, but worry that it will be wasted time? I had a really enjoyable group coaching session yesterday with people from an organisation keen to support its neurodivergent employees. The main topic of the session was emotions at work which generated some fascinating discussions. I’ve been working with this organisation for a few weeks and I’ve been so impressed by the way in which its employees look out for each other and respect each other’s differences. Everyone taking part in the sessions has engaged and is keen to look at how they can improve things to ensure they are truly inclusive. These sessions have reinforced to me the value of taking time away from the everyday work and reflecting on how we work and what could be improved. We often have a tendency to think we can’t afford the time to create this space, but the reality is that we can’t afford not to. When we started working together, some people in the groups felt these sessions were something they had to make time for, but this has changed and now they’re talking about introducing sessions like these within their teams as they have seen the value of making time for ideas and connection. I’m back again today for a session with another group where I’m sure there will be more great discussions. We spent some time yesterday talking about gratitude and one thing I’m grateful for is the chance to work with these groups. #neurodiversity #inclusion

🤔 How can I be an active ally? In the article below in Harvard Business Review, I share the seven behaviours of active allyship from my book ‘The Art of Active Allyship’. “The answer to the question What can I do? lies in…allyship. Allyship is the key to creating inclusive workplaces. According to recent research, employees of organizations that foster strong allyship and inclusion cultures are 50% less likely to leave, 56% more likely to improve their performance, 75% less likely to take a sick day, and up to 167% more likely to recommend their organizations as great places to work. I believe that what we need to make our workplaces truly inclusive is a clear set of practical behaviors that we can embed into our day-to-day working lives. To address this need, below are the seven allyship behaviors that I explore in my book The Art of Active Allyship.
