It's October, and we can't quite believe it! But before we start getting out the pumpkins and planning our Halloween costumes, we wanted to re-cap some interesting things that happened last month in the world of kids and media. I've literally put up about 50,000, probably 100,000 posters or flyers through the years. For a long time, it was the number one way we got students at Pan Theater. We let people know about our performing troupes and shows, posting anywhere from San Jose up to Sonoma and Napa. To be honest, I just find making posters, looking at posters, and going in all the coffee shops to be a lot of fun. That's how we started really growing as a theater—through posters and flyers. If you have an improv class, improv theater, acting classes, writing classes, or anything like that, everyone talks about digital marketing like Facebook and Google ads, but posters and flyers work too. If you have the time to distribute them yourself or use a flyer service like Thumbtack Bugle, they can help get the word out. Over time, it compounds, people start to remember you, and your presence grows. As you're building up your classes, shows, and everything else, definitely consider flyers and posters. They've done wonders for Pan Theater. Even these days, as we move more and more towards digital, we're still doing a good portion of our marketing with flyers and posters. It's World Theater Day! I wanted to discuss how theater has played an essential role in my personal and professional life simply because it is the one subject I could discuss anywhere and anytime. If you're familiar with the movie "Dodgeball," you'd know Patches O'Houlihan's famous line, "If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball." If you can ugly cry under spotlights in front of strangers, you can present a PowerPoint. If you can memorize a score, several dance numbers, and that one monologue in Hamlet that has yet to go away, you can "wear many hats." If you have rehearsed for months, put 200% into a production, and the director says, "We don't have a show," four days before opening night, you know how to work in a fast-paced environment. If you walked into your local butcher, baker, or candlestick maker's shop asking them to purchase an ad in your theater's playbill, you know the right words to say in that sales pitch. If you're asking where that clique from high school who sang in the hallways, rolled around in glitter, and did unnecessary flash mobs at Applebees is, they are in Marketing.
