In continuation of our Building Brighter Future Series, we are excited to share lesson 2 of 9 from our Goodskills Career Builder initiative: Lesson Learned #2: Fill Real Workforce Gaps At Goodwill of Western New York we learned the importance of targeting training to fill genuine workforce gaps. It's important that you work directly with hiring employers of in demand jobs to understand their needs. Employers MUST be equal partners at the table. Identify the skills that employers are looking for and build curriculum that supports those needs. Training without clear job opportunities only reinforces skepticism in the communities we serve. All too often we hear, "I don't need another certificate, I need a job." It's crucial to identify positions with good pay, benefits, and upward mobility. What do you think? Thank you for your open reflection and being so onboard with the most important part of the process of which was the constructive peer on peer review element of the day. Some fantastic discussions and actions have come out of the day, including some great collaborative ideas that we can move forward together, which makes me really excited for the future. It's more than just ads—it's about embedding in communities, showing up, showing commitment, and building trust over time. You have to show that you mean what you say, and say what you mean. You are going to make mistakes and have missteps. Be transparent, own them, make needed corrections and move on. No one expects you to be perfect, but they do expect you to listen and respond. At Goodwill of Western New York we continue to learn, continue to iterate and are working hard with our strategic partners and local employers to give our community what it needs to help fill in demand jobs in manufacturing and technology. Recently, I had the privilege of co-authoring an article with Julia Freeland Fisher from the Clayton Christensen Institute. Together, we highlighted how career-connected learning is being implemented into core curriculum so ALL students develop crucial skills for life-long success. In our article, we highlighted the efforts of Anaheim Union High School Dst where initiatives like Career Launch have empowered students to explore their interests and existing professional connections. It’s inspiring to see educators like Scott Reindl and Superintendent Michael Matsuda prioritizing career readiness through flexible adoption and support, ensuring that career preparation becomes core to academics. Some key insights from the article: ⭐ Integrating Career Preparation: Bringing career skills and connections into core academics is not only possible, but crucial for equitable career preparation. ⭐ Bridging the Gap: Many students face barriers in developing essential career skills like networking. Grateful for the opportunity to share insights and strategies today at the The Career Leadership Collective 2024 Virtual Conference! Over the past three years, we’ve been focused on transforming PLNU’s Career Services strategy to drive meaningful impact at scale. By implementing three key interventions, we’ve dramatically expanded our reach and capacity: 1. Shift from One-on-One to Group Advising: Facilitating peer learning while increasing access and efficiency. 2. Academic Integration: Engaging faculty and students through class collaborations, faculty development initiatives, and a dedicated career readiness course. 3. Digital Expansion: Delivering 24/7 access to resources through an enhanced website, online learning modules, and a dynamic social media presence. These efforts have enabled us to engage with over half of the student population, propelling us into what we call the Career Ecosystem Era.
