DAY 2: CRMs, BATTERY 2030+ We learned new advances in recycling through the ReUse Batteries, RENOVATE EU (Eliana Quartarone), and Revitalise (Sulalit Bandyopadhyay) sessions. key learnings: Innovative methods for repurposing battery materials, and circular and chemistry-neutral approaches for recycling and recovering battery waste feeds. Special discussions on high-purity pre-treatment, direct recycling, and green hydrometallurgical approaches for recycling Lithium Ion and Sodium Ion batteries. Looking towards "Made in Europe," Brecht Dewulf from KU Leuven – SOLVOMET R&I Centre explained the MSA-based flowsheet process for producing NMC cathodes, emphasizing a promising step towards self-sufficiency in critical materials. Marcus Jahn from AIT Austrian Institute of Technology discussed innovative technologies designed to strengthen the European raw materials supply chain, which is crucial for the continent's strategic autonomy. We are proud to announce that Leitat is part of the STREAMS Project project. Collaborating with AIT and the consortium, we are contributing to robotic battery dismantling, metal extraction, and recovery using membranes and electrochemical techniques. Time to look back at the 2nd General Assembly meeting of project RELiEF held in Lappeenranta in Finland on 12 and 13 June 2024. We can look back to a great meeting, where TechConcepts has hosted a short team-building session and a #workshop to pave the way for the exploitation of the results that will come from project #RELiEF. Congratulations 👏 to all partners for having such a wonderful project and a great #teamspirit. Our special thanks go out to the colleagues of LUT University for being a wonderful host!! We also participated to the #ExplorerConference on 11 and 12 June, where we presented our poster "Exploitation pathways of recycling Lithium from secondary sources: a sustainable transition" together with our colleagues of EURICE – European Research and Project Office GmbH. The main objective of RELiEF is to push forward the necessary advancements to use Lithium-containing waste-streams for Europe’s Lithium supply safety and independence. The key focus is to recover battery grade Li from secondary sources and low-grade ores under one roof, by developing a flexible and continuous process flow sheet. TechConcepts B.V. participates in project RELiEF, which will run from July 2022 to June 2025. TechConcepts will be leading part of the exploitation activities and will coordinate the "RELiEF road show". In other words, we have an important role in ensuring that the future Li-batteries can be built with Lithium recovered from waste-streams, securing Europe's Lithium demand for batteries with own resources. And we will probably organise some nice team-building events during our General Assembly meetings :-).

On July 30th and 31st we kicked-off project BASE EU: Battery Passport for Transparency & Circularity. Next week on October 15th, Flexby will be attending the CINEA - European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency Cluster event on 'aviation/maritime fuels and biomethane' dedicated to exploring the advancements and future directions in these sectors. The event aims to facilitate discussions on the potential and limitations of feedstocks, technological processes, end-product valorisation, and provide a platform for new projects to share insights on their achievements and challenges.
