Yesterday I took the Patn team on a field trip. We visited Factory International to experience the David Hockney exhibition, Bigger & Closer (Not Smaller & Further Away). As an immersive experience, it really works. One reason for this is that Hockney’s art lends itself well to the sort of large-scale spectacle and animation presented here. Another is the use of Hockney himself as a narrator, so, despite its scale, the exhibition feels personal. Finally, there’s the exhibition space. The Northern Warehouse space at Factory International is vast, presenting an enveloping canvas to project Hockney’s striking images. What’s this got to do with either branding or placemaking you might ask? Culture, in multiple forms, is central to placemaking. It’s the glue binding people together and making them feel they belong. This applies to your local park as much as a landmark venue like Factory International. What comes across at this exhibition is how accessible it makes Hockney’s work without dumbing down or diluting his messages. It feels inclusive but it doesn’t spoon-feed its audience. It engages and inspires – two things all placemakers (and branding agencies) should aim to do.

Why have a strong organizing principle for my experience? Don’t visitors just go wherever they want? Yep. And that’s exactly why you need a strong organizing principle. Because whatever principle you use — time, category, hierarchy — no visitor will follow it like a duty. Not the streakers, not the strollers, not the scholars. Organizational principles aren’t physical barriers meant to *restrict* the visitor. They are a mental framework meant to *free* the visitor. Let’s say your exhibition is chronological: history of feminism in California. No visitor will make it their duty to experience every detail. Often they can’t. There’s another visitor in the way. Or they have to catch up with their group. They’re not literally following your framework. But they sense it. They know the reason things are where they are. When they do reconnect, they are like someone jumping to a new page in the dictionary. They know why those words are on that new page. Here’s the thing: You need a strong organizing principle, but not because visitors will follow it physically. Using it as the underlying logic, they are now free to do it their way. A friend of mine at Uganda Broadcasting Corporation (UBC) shared a tribute image of the late Bbale Francis, an iconic and veteran news anchor at UBC who graced our TV sets for more that two decades! This got me thinking about corporate museums and the role they can play for an organization. Traditionally, corporate museums focused on the brand history of the organization, the vision and achievements. But now the focus is increasingly on marketing, strategic communication, brand image enhancement and also building a relationship with your customers or audience. Corporate museums are now playing an important role in presenting the organization to the public. It has become a great platform to showcase and communicate details about a company. Corporate museums can also influence the decision making of future market prospects by creating positive publicity among everyone. Corporate museums also help in showcasing the organization persona. Here, a well artistically designed museum tends to reflect the practices and standards of doing business. These corporate museums can also foster employee engagement as the employees feel motivated, innovative and energized on seeing beautiful historical objects/images and company achievements being displayed at the organization premises. This goes a long way in reminding the employees of the organization's heritage and the goodwill among the public. With a corporate museum, an organization can also earn that extra income from this revenue stream by charging visitors an entrance fee to the museum space! As a business, it is time to embrace the importance of design and user-interaction so as to leverage the benefits to gain an edge over your competitor and a corporate museum does just that! Keep those organizational historic objects and documentary material, collections of art and photos, furniture, textiles, metals, ceramics and glass, etc. They could come in handy when you think of setting up a corporate museum! Beauty and the importance of aesthetics to boost cognition. Too often design gets second place and production values overshadowed by the cost and return argument. We may need to think again.
