Had a great interview with Alan Taylor from Entrepreneur Media on the challenges and double standards that exist for women in leadership. The expectation to always be nice. The belief that you can’t be “mean” enough to push a company to success. That if you’re direct and assertive you’re seen as a “b-word”. That people say things to women leaders they’d never say to a man. And how to overcome those deeply held and unconscious beliefs that you may run into ad a woman in leadership. I recently had the opportunity to sit down with two amazing local leaders — Kaitlin Eskelson from Visit Salt Lake and SLC mayor Erin Mendenhall — both of these visionary leaders are walking the walk. At the end of our discussion, we were asked what advice we would give up-and-coming female leaders: 1️⃣ Understand that your career will look more like a jungle gym than a ladder. 2️⃣ Trust your intuition, even when you don’t yet have the right words to express what you’re thinking. 3️⃣ Find your voice. It’s a process. Lean into your core group of women. 4️⃣ Be bold enough to speak up and at the same time be vulnerable. 5️⃣ Check in with your heart, unpack what you don’t need to carry around and as it’s being offered, check in to see if it’s true.
