As a founder, I used to feel intense FOMO whenever I saw TechCrunch headlines. Why couldn’t I raise those massive rounds? But after a decade in startups, I’ve learned that big funding rounds don’t really mean much. A big round isn’t a market validation. A big round isn’t proof that your business model works. A big round is just one VC at one firm who liked your pitch and decided to take a gamble. I get it—it’s tough to see two YC-backed, young first-time founders announce a $5M pre-seed on TechCrunch when you’re struggling to secure $1M. But here’s the truth: Their success doesn’t mean they’re more likely to win. And it doesn’t mean you’re more likely to fail. Honestly, it doesn’t mean anything at all. Look at Thrasio—they raised $3.5B in 3.5 years and were once valued at $10B. Now they’re bankrupt. The model never worked, but you wouldn’t know that from the headlines. As a founder, I’ve realized you have to tune out the noise. Don’t get distracted by what others are doing. There’s really only one path forward.. Focus on playing YOUR game.
