PH21 Gallery presents: 'Silence' – A Curated International Photography Exhibition, January 11 – February 4, 2025 - Silence is always juxtaposed against its opposites: sound, noise, and loudness. It is strongly associated with loneliness, alienation, the unknown and disturbing landscape on the one hand, and known tranquillity and peace on the other. Photographically, the contrast between deep darkness and dazzling light is also crucial. After natural or social catastrophes, everything falls silent: empty cities, villages, abandoned public transport and empty workplaces serve as reminders of the transience and fragility of humankind. Silence is accompanied by quiet activities such as contemplation and meditation, which negate the very nature of action itself. Additionally, silence is often present in still lifes, cityscapes, portraits, and many other photographic genres. PH21 Gallery invites photographers to submit their work for our group exhibition themed Silence. We welcome submissions from all photographers interested in sharing their experiences of silence with a broader international audience through exposure at PH21 Gallery. The theme is broadly construed without any photographic genre restrictions. We are interested in all possible creative photographic interpretations of the theme. Paul Hart’s current exhibition @harleyfoundation includes this commanding image of a lead pine tree growing a the forest edge entitled Guardian.  Gerry Badger wrote in Paul’s publication Truncated from which this exhibition and this photograph is carefully selected, that; “the sense of being at rest within it [the forest], of stopping still at a particular place and paying close attention to what is there is strong. Photography is the natural medium for meditation, freezing objects in space and time for our scrutiny. It does this especially felicitously in the case of people, that is, in the portrait, but the same strategy utilised to make a portrait – we might call it benign confrontation – also works well with natural and man-made objects. Paul Hart’s images of single trees function like portraits, highlighting character and nuanced individualities – with one important difference. Trees do not react like people when a camera is pointed at them. Tree ‘portraits’ depend solely upon the sensibility of the photographer. And yet, there is a distinct anthropomorphic aspect to trees. Of all natural objects, trees seem closest to man. It is clearly something to do with them being upright, perhaps the way their branches seem like arms. This is what draws Paul Hart (and us) to them, each tree has an individual character. Here, perhaps because they are pines, they are not so individualistic as some other species of trees. Photography is an art in itself. It is one of the finest art forms that require the greatest attention to detail. This photograph by Aakanksha Sunil (exhibited in one of the Science galleries, Bangalore, 2021) metaphorically relates the ‘bubble’ to our ‘life’. It describes it as a symbolization of life's tender yet persevering nature. Caring for the intricacies not only aids in better decision-making in the business ecosystems but also enables the achievement of high value at low cost. Cost-effective production and engineering of top-notch products and services can be fulfilled only when every detail is right at the same time. Thus, a click within a fraction of a second has beautifully revitalized our thinking and has emphasized that true mastery - whether in art or business - lies in our abilities to observe the subtle nuances that can act as the cornerstone of success. Old Money Exhibits New Perspective They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but when your subject is as small and intricate as an ancient coin, that picture becomes a complex puzzle. As a museum photographer, I've spent countless hours wrestling with the challenges of capturing these tiny works of art. And when it comes to numismatics, the stakes are especially high. My first encounter with a coin collection was akin to stepping into a miniature world. I was handed a velvet-lined case filled with what looked like ordinary metal discs. But under the scrutiny of my macro lens, they transformed into landscapes of intricate detail. Each coin was a universe unto itself, with figures, letters and details etched into its surface. The challenge was to illuminate these hidden worlds without creating a glare that obscured the details. It was a delicate dance with light, requiring precise positioning and experimentation with different angles. I found myself spending hours in a darkened studio, surrounded by the soft glow of my equipment, as I meticulously captured each coin. Meanwhile, in a different corner of the museum, the exhibit team was facing their own set of challenges. How do you showcase objects so small that they can be easily overlooked? How do you protect these fragile artifacts from the curious hands of visitors? Their solution was as ingenious as it was simple: magnifying glasses. I remember the day they brought in a prototype. It was a small, handheld device with a powerful lens. As I peered through it at one of my photographs, the details of the coin seemed to leap out at me. It was a revelation. The exhibit team had found a way to bring the viewer into the same intimate world I had discovered through my lens. The day the exhibition opened, I stood in the crowd, watching as people marveled at the tiny treasures. Some laughed in surprise as they discovered the intricate details hidden within the coins. Others were lost in contemplation, their faces inches from the glass. It was a moment of pure satisfaction. The collaboration between photography and exhibit design had created a truly immersive experience. Working with numismatics has taught me the importance of patience, precision, and a keen eye for detail. It has also shown me the power of collaboration. By combining the expertise of photographers, exhibit designers, and museum curators, we can create extraordinary experiences that bring history to life. #art #numismatics #exhibition #photography #money

PHOTOGRAPHIC EYE – GEORADAR   “The photographic eye is the way in which a photographer interprets and translates the world around them through their images. It involves the ability to perceive and capture details, emotions, colors, shapes, as well as plays of light and shadow, which may go unnoticed or underestimated by others. It's a unique expression of the photographer's sensitivity and individual perspective, seeking to reveal the beauty and depth in seemingly ordinary everyday things.”   I would like to share the experience of this work through photographs. Recently, I have been considering the idea of holding an exhibition that presents our work in a more personal and meaningful way. I have come across several images that stimulate my imagination, leading me to reflect on the potential of bringing our photographs together in a unique and inspiring context. Therefore, after evaluating the material, I intend to consider the possibility of a physical presentation of these photos in the near future. Following the success of the UNITY exhibition at The Photography & Video Show, I'm looking for a temporary space to hang the work. Comprised 21 foam-mounted prints (20, 70x70cm and one 70x100cm courtesy of nPhoto) do you know a company with lobby space that might be interested in featuring some/all of the exhibition? UNITY is the fourth international exhibition from my online gallery space, Felt Photographic. What makes it different is that it's curated entirely on the felt sense - from how the panel select images, to how the gallery is arranged, and the space that visitors are invited into. The aim is to bring art back to a more human experience. There's no requirement to know anything about photography or what you're looking at. The invitation is to unlearn everything you've previously been taught, come out of your head, drop into your body and feel the art. Then notice what you're responding strongly too and use this insight to inform you where you're at, what you need and what might change as a result.
