IIllia Polosukhin, one of the key creators in AI, wants to build the world’s largest open-source language model using blockchain. This model would be almost 4 times bigger than the best open-source model available today, Meta’s Llama 3.1. Goal: Create a massive, 1.4 trillion-parameter language model open to everyone. Why blockchain: It will make it possible to fund and track who contributes computer power, rewarding them transparently. Why decentralize?: Instead of one big company owning it, this model would be built and owned by the community. Challenges ahead: Technical issues, like slow network speeds and coordination, will need solutions. At Monday's Public Panel Public Talk: Decentralised Economy and Regulation — Blockchain & Crypto event by Digital & Analogue Partners, I was asked about AI and blockchain's relationship. My response: These technologies aren't separate anymore - they're symbiotic and must be viewed as one. If we let AI accelerate how it's been, you can't tell what's real anymore. A phone call might not actually be your family member's voice. A video might not be authentic. A single bad actor could cause catastrophic damage. That's why we need blockchain for transparency, identity, and trust. I believe we're entering a golden age of innovation - but only if we do it right. AI needs massive amounts of data to solve humanity's toughest challenges, from hunger to finance to medicine. But we can't keep feeding all that data to big tech or centralized systems. The path forward is independent, decentralized AI - where individuals control their agents and data. Open-source systems protect privacy and drive innovation. History has shown that when we build in the open, we build better. Without this decentralized infrastructure, the AI revolution risks spiraling out of control. But if we get it right, we can unlock unprecedented progress for humanity. The choice is ours. #AI #Blockchain #Decentralization

I spoke to a few people who weren't getting web3 x AI. Then, I shared what I learned from Illia and Erik at ETH Denver, and it clicked. Illia Polosukhin (NEAR Protocol, co-author of the paper that gave us transformers and ChatGPT) and Erik Voorhees (Morpheus AI, ShapeShift) shared about the fusion of blockchain's decentralization with AI's capabilities and how it could redefine permissionless innovation (link to video in first comment). NEAR began with a vision for AI, launched as a layer 1 blockchain protocol, and is now at the forefront to integrate these two technologies together. The key? 3 critical factors: 1.) Community curated datasets - so people understand where the data came from 2.) Open source AI models - the models represent what data is put in. That decision making is opaque and is affected by ideology (like Google's Gemini only creating images of historical US presidents as minorities). 3.) Monetize open source models using blockchain/crypto - to incentivize more model options and reward creators who put all that hard work in for a public good This conversation goes beyond technology. It's about reshaping power dynamics in the digital age, especially when it comes to data. The answer isn't to regulate giants like Google. It's to create viable, decentralized alternatives. The blockchain world is teaching the AI world how to be permissionless. Decentralization allows intelligence to be permissionless. It's my theory that the age of AI and the ascendence of blockchain technology are about to collide and reinforce each other 💥 Why? One is creating the indisputable need for the other. Right now, AI is creating a world that will make images infinitely available. We will see a glut of them all over the internet. We're already seeing that, in fact. So, imagine a world where you cannot trust a single JPG you see. You can't know if it's real or not, if it was taken by someone who says they took it, or if it depicts something real (we're already kind of seeing this, too.) Now, imagine if the device you use to CAPTURE all these images could also inscribe a way to verify an image's origin on an immutable global ledger. "Yes, Alexis Ohanian took this photo Tuesday night at 7:42 PM." Your device could sign an immutable global ledger—a blockchain!—digitally, confirming that this .JPG is what it claims to be. Suddenly, you have a great case for the blockchain that isn't speculative or particularly flashy – it's utility. I don't know what projects will win in this space specifically, but to me, it feels pretty clear that there is an emergent market need. If you're a President or a CEO – even if you're just a teenage kid—it's about to be very, very valuable to prove that an image is yours.

I just did a presentation last week on how "AI Confirms For Tokenization of Commerce." Sharing the video tomorrow! Fake Products, Websites, Content, and Experiences are already a problem. $1.7T are sold in counterfeit goods a year! Every product and piece of content should be tokenized as this is the only way to understand origin. When the originator of the content or product tokenizes it, they are essentially stamping that they created it. They can put key information into the token itself or via an application layer be used for anything from authenticity, to warranty, to loyalty. Can't someone else tokenize a product and say they are tokenizing the original? Now it comes down to trust and origin. If Nike tokenizes a shoe, you trust its the original. If anyone else tokenizes a Nike shoe, you won't trust it. Alexis, we really should talk sometime.
