The role of immigrant physicians and healthcare workers in the United States is critical to our stability. Of the 15.2 million U.S. residents in a healthcare occupation, 2.8 million (18%) are immigrants. Coronary artery bypass grafting and later, coronary interventional procedures were both pioneered in the United States by immigrant physicians, arguably amongst the greatest advances in the history of medicine. Without immigrant physicians and other healthcare workers, the COVID pandemic could not have been successfully controlled in the U.S. The contribution of children of immigrants to healthcare is even greater. As it has become fashionable to denigrate immigrants amongst our political class, and purposefully blur the lines between legal and other types of immigration for political purposes, all this is worth pondering upon. #healthcare

In June 2024, Minister Marc Miller announced an exciting update to the Caregiver Program, stating that candidates under this pilot program would receive Permanent Residency (PR) upon arrival—a move welcomed by caregivers and their families. However, during a recent House of Commons session, when questioned about the program’s progress, no updates were provided. This lack of clarity leaves caregivers and immigration stakeholders uncertain about the program’s future. Caregivers play a critical role in supporting Canadian families and addressing labour shortages, often making personal sacrifices to care for others. Recognizing their contributions with PR on arrival would be a game-changer for both caregivers and the communities they serve. We hope the government will provide a clear update soon to ensure caregivers receive the recognition and stability they deserve. Every delay affects not just the applicants but also Canadian families relying on their essential care. #CaregiverProgram #ImmigrationCanada #PRonArrival #CanadaImmigration #MarcMiller

The opening paragraph of this article is a reminder of how unproductive it is to focus on the burdens of newcomers to an existing group/population/community without considering their contributions. Studies have consistently shown that about 18% of American healthcare workers are immigrants. "Immigrants" include naturalized citizens and Lawful Permanent Residents (green card holders) as well as TPS and DACA recipients. Restricting TPS and undoing DACA as anti-immigration policymakers propose will worsen the existing shortage of healthcare workers.

Caregivers in Canada: A Growing Need Canada is facing a significant increase in demand for caregivers as the population ages. With over 9 million Canadians expected to retire in the next six years, the need for caregivers will only continue to grow. According to the 2024-2026 Immigration Levels Plan, Canada aims to welcome over 15,000 new permanent residents through caregiver programs. Since 2019, approximately 5,700 caregivers and their family members have become permanent residents through the Home Child Care Provider Pilot and the Home Support Worker Pilot. However, the Canadian Centre for Caregiving Excellence highlights pressing concerns, including: - Many caregivers are over 65 and may require care themselves - Nearly one in five caregivers are over 65 and are less likely to access support services As the senior population grows, so does the need for caregivers. 🎉 Connecticut Expands Healthcare Access for Children Up to Age 15 Regardless of Immigration Status 🎉 In a significant policy shift effective July 1, Connecticut is expanding its state-subsidized Husky Healthcare program to include children up to age 15, irrespective of their immigration status or that of their parents. Previously, unrestricted access was only available to children up to age 12, depending on their immigration status. This expansion is set to provide vital healthcare coverage to thousands of additional children across the state. Advocates for immigrant rights and healthcare supporters are applauding the move, noting that it represents a major step forward in ensuring broader healthcare access and improving overall community health outcomes. For 53 years, we have been tirelessly advocating for access to Connecticut Medicaid. No one is healthy unless we are all healthy. I'm here to report that since January 1, 2023, at this health center alone, we have enrolled over 500 children, said Dr. Sue Lagarde, head of Fair Haven Community Health Care, during a celebratory event in New Haven. Governor Ned Lamont also emphasized the inclusive nature of this initiative, stating, “God doesn't ask for your immigration status; He says we're all His children. That's why we're standing here today with each and every one of you, doing what we can to continue to extend healthcare as a basic right to more and more citizens.” Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/eHmrTTJQ #HealthcareAccess #CommunityHealth #ImmigrantRights #Connecticut What are your thoughts on this healthcare expansion?
