The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit has blocked the Fearless Fund from awarding grants exclusively to Black women entrepreneurs. Black women raise around 0.4% of all venture capital funds in any given year, and grant programs like what Fearless built were created to fill that funding gap. Founded with a mission to support women of color entrepreneurs, the Fearless Fund plays a crucial role in addressing systemic inequalities that have long hindered the progress of underrepresented groups in the business world. Why is this important? ➡ Bridging the Funding Gap: Historically, women of color have faced significant barriers in accessing venture capital. According to a 2020 report by digitalundivided, Black women received just 0.64% of total venture capital funding. The Fearless Fund directly addresses this disparity by providing essential funding and resources to women of color entrepreneurs, enabling them to scale their businesses and bring innovative solutions to market. ➡ Empowering Diverse Entrepreneurs: Diverse perspectives drive innovation. By supporting women of color, the Fearless Fund fosters a more inclusive entrepreneurial ecosystem. These entrepreneurs bring unique insights and solutions that reflect the needs and aspirations of diverse communities. 👩🏾💻EMPOWERING BLACK ENTREPRENEURSHIP: Luna Launchpad, founded by Nikita Allen, is an initiative designed to help women of color grow their small businesses. This program provides a one-year transition plan focused on financial literacy, strategic sales, and productivity, through journaling exercises. 💰WHY IT MATTERS? The program aims to help women achieve financial stability and sustainability for their businesses. Luna Launchpad is free to participants. Allen said women of color who own for-profit businesses and are ready to scale them are ideal candidates for the program. Allen will graduate her first cohort of six participants on Saturday. There’s so much going on today: I just read in article on Atlanta Journal-Constitution by Mirtha Donastorg about the recent news that the Fearless Fund, an initiative dedicated to empowering women of color entrepreneurs, has settled a lawsuit that forced the closure of its grant program for Black women business owners. As CEO of HBCU 20x20 | The Application this hits close to home. The journey for Black entrepreneurs, especially Black women, is filled with obstacles that extend far beyond access to capital. Initiatives like the Fearless Fund were created to address the glaring disparities in venture capital—where women of color received just 0.39% of all investments in 2022. These numbers reflect a system that wasn’t built for us, but the work we do is a testament to our resilience. Despite this legal outcome, we must remain steadfast in our commitment to creating economic opportunities for those historically excluded. I know Fearless Fund will continue to push the boundaries, break down barriers, and ensure that underrepresented groups—whether in education or entrepreneurship—are equipped with the resources and support they deserve. This is a moment to stay fearless.
