After decades of hiding from cameras and struggling to accept my altered smile, I’ve found a new sense of pride and confidence. So good to see GCN reaching their audience on this. "The evidence is very, very clear. This is not a debate... Driving is causing a public health hazard of epic proportions... Countless more premature deaths from an epidemic of inactivity though a culture where we drive everywhere. And we don't even notice". We live in a culture where "it's ok for people to die from cars... (where) the harms of driving are something we don't even think about... "Our built environments are part of the problem... It's not our fault we think cars are king". I'd argue we don't even think they're king - that would require thought. We just don't think. It's amazing what we simply accept as moto-normativity. On road design we reinforce the message everywhere: "Please drive, please do not walk... constant messaging you're in the way" if you walk or ride. It's about who has permission to move in our public spaces and who has to beg for it. "Once you see it, you can't unsee it". I wish it were that simple; and our job in widely communicating, socialising and normalising this would be so much easier! "The first step is to acknowledge there's a problem, and we're nowhere near that yet.
