Eco-friendly/alternative to plastic usage: The demand for alternatives to plastic in India is growing due to increasing environmental awareness and concerns about plastic pollution. Alternatives like biodegradable plastics, paper bags, cloth bags, and plant-based packaging are gaining importance to reduce environmental impact and promote sustainability. Government regulations and consumer preferences are also driving the shift towards eco-friendly alternatives, the value of plastic usage currently in India is approximately 2.5 lack crores. Indeed, in the Indian market for bioplastic manufacturers, there's room for visionary leaders to step forward and make a significant impact. Those who champion alternatives to conventional plastics are not only appreciated but also essential in driving sustainable innovation and promoting environmental stewardship in India. #bioplastic #innovation #plasticusage #environment #greenuse

Plastics are critical to modern life and are here to stay. However, plastic waste presents a severe environmental, economic, and societal challenge. At current pace, plastics will outweigh fish in the ocean by 2060. India alone generates 10 million to 12 million metric tons of plastic waste every year, much of which remains unrecovered or mismanaged. Tackling this challenge will require solutions across the entire value chain from plastic production and usage to collection & sorting, as well as recycling and usage of recyclates. This is only possible via tight collaboration across producers, brand owners, industrial stakeholders and government. Our latest report with the Confederation of Indian Industry, "Solving Plastic Waste: Roadmap for a Sustainable Future," lays out a transformative path forward to address this challenge. ♻ It is Global Recycling Day! ❓#DYK that till date, only 9% of plastic produced globally has been recycled. Around 80% of plastic waste is dumped into landfills, oceans, or other waterbodies. 📖Source: Geyer R. et. al. (2017, July 19). 𝘗𝘳𝘰𝘥𝘶𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯, 𝘶𝘴𝘦, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘧𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘴 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘮𝘢𝘥𝘦. Advocating for reuse models is a step in the right direction that the Confederation of Indian Industry is taking to address the rampant plastic pollution resulting from the consumer led economic growth in the country. India is at an advantage since its traditional consumption behaviors already align with reuse and repair. This is an opportunity for the industry to incentivize and regulate FMCG to adopt these traditional models.
🌏While a majority of efforts to address plastic pollution caused by packaging focus on #recycling, #reuse is a crucial step that is often overlooked. Implementing and scaling reuse models is critical to addressing single-use plastic waste and transitioning to a circular plastics economy. 🎯Target 2 of the India Plastics Pact asks signatories, by 2030, to place 100% reusable, recyclable or compostable plastic packaging on the Indian market. 🔖The India Plastics Pact, a voluntary business initiative managed by the Confederation of Indian Industry, released 𝐋𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐩𝐞 𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭: 𝐑𝐞𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐚, which focuses on reuse business models and highlights its economic, social, and environmental benefits in the Indian context. 📖Know more here: https://lnkd.in/gSvCwK3e 🤝The India Plastics Pact is a voluntary business initiative that provides a platform to stakeholders across the plastics value chain for innovative and collaborative action to create a circular economy for plastic packaging in India. 🌐Join the India Plastics Pact today, write to us at ippaction@cii.in or visit www.indiaplasticspact.org. #IndiaPlasticsPact #CircularEconomy #TimeToActIsNow #TogetherWeCan Confederation of Indian Industry, CII-ITC Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Development

The Material Recycling Association of India cordially invites you to the "Conference on Decarbonization Through Material Circularity," scheduled on October 21, 2024, at the New Habitat Centre in New Delhi, India. Click link to #Register: https://lnkd.in/dQuA3KiA and secure your participation at the conference. This conference is strategically designed to facilitate in-depth discussions on the critical role of the circular carbon economy, carbon credits, carbon finance, automotive material circularity, End-of-Life Vehicle, and #Recycling in curbing global emissions while ensuring robust economic growth. Furthermore, the conference will underscore the unwavering commitment of the recycling industry to process waste materials and convert them into quality recycled products, effectively replacing virgin materials in the supply chain. This proactive approach not only conserves resources but also yields substantial carbon savings. With this process, recyclers are preserving resources, reducing reliance on virgin materials, and delivering sustainable products to support manufacturers, thereby it can create major carbon savings. It will also highlight How Automobile manufacturers, Recyclers (Metal, Tyre, Rubber, E-Waste, Paper, Battery), FMCG companies and financial institutions can achieve their Net Zero Goals by promoting Circularity. #MRAIConference #RecyclingIndustrEvent #Decarbonization #CarbonCredits #NetZeroGoals #CircularCarbonEconomy #CarbonCredits, #CarbonFinance #AutomotiveMaterialCircularity #Circularity #CircularEconomy #ELV #Manufacturer #Supplier #SustainableFuture #Sustainability #MaterialRecycling #SupportingPartner #SupportingAssociation #Association

While I agree with all you said in this post, the figure of 8 % of Plastics being recycled in India is grossly wrong. While quality of recycling needs vast improvement, quantity wise,India is far superior than most developed countries. For example PET recycling rates are one of the highest in the world. Similarly, Post consumer EPS packaging waste is collected and recycled to the extent of more than 75% in India and converted to photo frames and wall panels. There are at least 800 EPS melters across India and over 125 Extruders to produce Photo frames and wall panels

India banned single-use plastic in 2022, yet only 8% of our plastic is actually recycled today. As I’ve said before, plastic isn’t the problem—inefficient recycling is. So, why aren’t they being recycled? The answer lies in the approach at both ends: • Plastic often ends up in recycling bins with residue inside. Dirty plastics require costly cleaning, often leading them to landfills or oceans. • We still lack alternatives for many structures that still don’t have a recyclable alternate. But as manufacturers, we just can’t sit back and wait for the perfect solution. At Jhaveri Flexo, our R&D team is developing mono-material structures (>95% single substrate) which can be mechanically recycled for several use cases. We’re also using PIR in around 20% of our production & doing trials around PCR to ensure we’re an active part of the solution. In 2021, India became the first Asian country to launch a ‘Plastics Pact’ and by 2030, we aim to make 100% of plastic packaging recyclable and 30% made from recycled post consumer waste. It’s time to rethink our approach. Instead of passing the problem along, we must be genuinely ready to manage plastic waste. Agreed? #india #plastics #recycling
