Meet Terry Jo Bichell—a remarkable woman who, in her fifties, made a life-changing decision to shift from being a midwife to becoming a neuroscientist, all in pursuit of a cure for her son’s rare condition, Angelman syndrome. When her youngest child, Lou, was diagnosed with #Angelman syndrome, Terry didn't just accept the status quo. She took matters into her own hands, going back to school at 49 to earn a PhD in neuroscience. Despite the challenges of balancing motherhood, schoolwork, and research, Terry's determination never wavered. She turned her tears and sleepless nights into a force of positive change, not just for her family, but for countless others impacted by rare neurological disorders. Today, Terry stands as a beacon of hope and resilience. Her nonprofit, COMBINEDBrain, is a testament to her commitment to accelerating research and treatment for rare genetic conditions. Through her work, Terry continues to build bridges between patient advocacy, scientific research, and pharmaceutical innovation. Terry’s story reminds us that it’s never too late to pursue your passion, and that with determination, you can transform personal challenges into global impact. 💡 If you're facing a seemingly insurmountable challenge, let Terry's journey inspire you to take that bold step forward. Sometimes, the greatest breakthroughs come from the most unexpected places. #Inspiration #Neuroscience #AngelmanSyndrome #Resilience #WomenInScience #NeverGiveUp https://lnkd.in/g7VNiGKx

Emotions = [E}nergy in motion Like everything else in this physical universe, emotions emit a vibrational frequency. The higher the frequency, the faster it vibrates. The higher, expanded emotional frequencies like presence (600) and joy (540) feel the best. The lower, contracted emotional frequencies like guilt (30) and shame (20) feel the worst. The body is not a storage unit. It is a transmitter and receiver of information at each moment. We can only receive information if we are in a similar vibrational frequency. (Like tuning into a radio station) Think about when someone you know is in a particularly good mood and you are not. Maybe that day, you are feeling the contraction of guilt or shame. When you are around them, isn’t their good mood just annoying? If we share a similar expanded vibrational space with them, we can join them quickly! They can act as catalysts. We cannot go from a very low vibrational state to a very high one instantly. It takes time to change gears. Be patient with yourself and know that it’s possible. No frequency lasts forever. Many of the adolescents I work with have a limited emotional vocabulary, making it more difficult for them to express their feelings and feel less confident in solving problems involving big emotions. You can introduce them to a list of emotions early. Explain what that emotion means the best you can. It can save them some heartache later on. #emotions #emotionalintellegence #parenting #pediatrics #teenmentalhealth

Right on, Julie! Retirement can be a different thing for each person. If you are sprinting toward "retirement" as some kind of panacea, you might want to examine what your are currently doing and why you feel like retirement is the saving grace. What we are saying is to stay engaged with a purpose, a team, a mission. Keep your brain active and engaged. Yes, spending more time with family and entertainment and travel is wonderful. Just don't take your brain for granted - the sudden "off switch" that sometimes comes with retirement can dramatically slow down certain brain activity, and, perhaps, accelerate age-related brain decline. Who wants that? If you want to keep you body in shape later in life, do the same for your brain. My plan is to teach one class a week, travel more with my wife, and volunteer for a worthy cause (like brain health ;)). #aging #performance #peakperformance #humanperformance #excellence #creativity #thrive #flourish #wellbeing

Exciting discoveries reveal that the brain undergoes significant changes when men become fathers. These changes promote a nurturing instinct, making them more invested in child-rearing. This isn't just about dads being good for their kids; it turns out, fatherhood can also have long-term benefits for men's mental well-being. Let's celebrate and support the essential role fathers play in child development and family health. Advocating for policies like paternity leave and workplace flexibility can empower dads to be actively involved in their children's lives. #Fatherhood #Neuroscience #FamilyWellness #PolicyMatters
Exciting discoveries in neuroscience celebrate the transformative role of #fatherhood! We know that men's brains change when they become fathers, and that this can be transformative. The brain and hormonal changes we observe in new dads tell us that nature intended men to participate in child rearing, because it equipped them with neurobiological architecture to do so. Men too, can show the fundamental instinct for nurturing that’s often attributed solely to mothers. Not only that, but men’s involvement in fatherhood can have long-term benefits for their brain health and for healthy societies. At a time when #boys and #men seem to be experiencing greater social isolation and declining occupational prospects, the role of father can provide a meaningful source of identity. But the transition to fatherhood can also be a time of vulnerability, which is why supporting fathers should be a priority for policymakers. This evidence supports a broader societal recognition of fatherhood as a critical aspect of #childdevelopment and family health. As fathers become more engaged, it's vital to advocate for public policies that support new parents, such as adequate paternity leave and workplace flexibility that encourage active fatherhood. Championing the essential role of #dads in nurturing the next generation, highlights the long-term benefits for their families and society. #Fatherhood #Children #Neuroscience #FamilyWellness #SocialPolicy Darby Saxbe University of Southern California

The ability to self-soothe in a healthy way is not something that can be taught through babies being left on their own to self regulate/ calm from a place of dysregulation/ distress. Neuroscience has shown that the journey to healthy self regulation and the genuine ability to self-soothe is borne of repeated and abundant experiences of being co-regulated by an attuned and sensitive caregiver. With the parts of the brain responsible for emotional regulation and rational thinking offline (though developing) throughout the first few years of life, our babies and toddlers need the support of someone who has those brain parts active to be their calm and soothe their distress. Nurture in infancy in the form of consistent, reliable coregulation is the path to healthy forms of self-soothing for our babies. This is not achieved through behavioural interventions like sleep training that insist babies go it alone to rush towards self-regulatory independence that is not developmentally appropriate or beneficial to long-term wellbeing of the child.
