China is by far the world’s largest emitter of carbon dioxide. Last year the country brought as many new coal-fired power plants on line as the rest of the world. On the other hand, the country has also been boosting its emphasis on transitioning to renewable energy sources. The government has targeted numerous support measures promoting clean energy and currently leads the world in investments in renewable energy. Chinese emission policy has two goals: hitting peak emissions before 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060. According to statements from the third plenary session of the Central Committee in July and subsequent planning documents, the green transition and emissions reduction remain high on the party agenda. A recent International Energy Agency (IEA) report on energy investment finds that China has moved significantly in building out its renewable energy capacity, accounting for about a third of all global investment in clean energy last year. For example, the volume of new solar panels installed in China last year was equivalent to the entire volume of new solar panels installed globally in 2022. According to the IEA, nearly 70 % more wind farms were built in 2023 than the previous year and 2023 was the fifth year in a row that China’s use of nuclear energy exceeded that of any other country. China this year already hit its goal of increasing wind and solar capacity to 1.2 terawatts, a target deadline originally set for 2030.

In China, new guidelines for local photovoltaic (PV) companies aim to limit increase of production capacity. Instead, the focus is shifting towards bolstering technological innovation, enhancing product quality and reducing production costs. Facing domestic overcapacity and fierce competition, China's solar cell industry is at a crossroads. The Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has issued new draft rules, intended to curb unchecked expansion of manufacturing capacity and accelerate sector consolidation. China’s overcapacity has more than once prompted foreign governments to adopt measures to protect their domestic markets. In promoting a more sustainable and innovative industry landscape, the MIIT’s new approach could possibly turn the tide. Do you believe these Chinese measures will create a more equal playing field for the global solar industry? #China #overcapacity #solar https://lnkd.in/eKwaN-Y9

Breaking from Christian Robles and I on E&E News: A group of U.S solar manufacturers filed a trade complaint today against Southeast Asia-based solar component exporters, placing a contentious trade dispute on President Biden's desk that will play out over the heat of the election season. QCells and six other U.S.-based solar companies allege that Chinese subsidiaries in Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand and Malaysia are tampering with the market for solar cells and panels -- an anti-dumping/countervailing duties petition of previously unprecedented scope, with major implications for the renewable energy transition. https://lnkd.in/gyFSusW6

In which I argue why #ALMM -- an approved white list of domestic module makers -- is a big mistake. It adversely impacts major stakeholders including solar developers, discoms, large scale employment, distorts our $100 billion electricity market, equity investors, lenders and even the government’s much vaunted net zero targets. If we could source crude from #Russia when the world made it a pariah thanks to #UkraineWar, we should leverage China overcapacity to our advantage too. Buy, not ban them. 👉👉I find this article out of Bloomberg fascinating. Most folks in our industry look at the Chinese ☀️ #solar module manufacturers as this juggernaut that can’t be stopped, with manufacturers in China booming while U.S. companies are still maturing. Apparently, that is not necessarily the case. In fact, it appears pricing pressures are starting to affect how well 🏭 manufacturers perform. Much like U.S. manufacturers, there are tiers, and at least one Chinese #solar industry leader thinks the weaker companies should be forced to close to strengthen the broader industry. To me, that signals that there are some vulnerabilities in the Chinese module industry that the United States, with proper private capital and governmental support, could and should exploit. What do you think? https://lnkd.in/eKwDCASy #Deliveringacleanenergyfuture #commercialsolar #communitysolar
