In 2022, there was a 7% increase in accidents compared to 2021, totaling 10 more accidents. Crisis has been the new normal for many companies – and product quality has been under pressure as one consequence of it. The aviation industry is just one example out of many. Companies face supply chain disruptions, cost pressure and an ever-growing number of regulatory requirements, just to name some. In such situations, a quality organization must ensure that high standards are kept up under any circunstances. Thus, some additional thoughts on the post from my side: Supplier quality // Ensure a more quality risk-based supplier selection, qualification and validation (e.g., new technologies, production facilities and processes increase quality risk!). Thus, make sure the quality department has (a strong) role in supplier management - a question almost as old as humanity! Production quality // Invest in production sites have been widely focused on efficiency gains through automation and digitization, often neglecting qualification on important (and not even really new!) quality assurance methods. It starts with "simple" things as consistently conducting Process FMEAs to ensure stable processes. Product development // Quality by design - yes, that is an old one (Juran 1992;). However, especially in times where the importance of software for product and customer satisfaction keeps rising, ensuring early testing (and not at the end of the product development cycle) has become an imperative.
