The race is on for solid-state batteries. But what are the opportunities and risks for OEMs, cell manufacturers, and other battery value chain players? And how can the final breakthrough be achieved? 🔋 ⚡ Solid-state batteries could not just revolutionize the automotive world but also enable electrification of aircraft, for example. Surveys by market researchers consistently show that customers want electric cars to meet the following three main criteria: long ranges, short charging times, and overall price tags comparable to those for combustion-engine cars. Additional demands on the batteries are related to their drive power, safety, and longevity. If electric cars can in fact be mass-produced with solid-state batteries, they would meet all these criteria. This would be possible thanks to solid electrolytes, which function as separators between the anodes and cathodes. Fast ion transport through solid electrolytes could enable charging times that are as fast as refueling. Experts estimate that it will take no more than ten minutes to “refuel” an electric car’s battery. The new technology will also enhance safety because the flammable liquid electrolytes in conventional lithium-ion batteries are omitted. Although it is extremely rare for lithium-ion batteries to catch fire, the risk can be virtually excluded for solid-state batteries. However, whether this new generation of batteries can become a real game changer depends on the success of the researchers and developers in this field. Numerous challenges, both technical and economic, need to be mastered before industrial production can begin. Has American Solid State Battery Technology Finally Arrived? In March of 2023, Environmental Communications Strategies looked at the future of lithium-ion batteries and how it might impact electric vehicles: https://lnkd.in/g2TZGn5B Two weeks ago, one of the US companies we featured - QuantamScape - signed a massif technology licensing deal with the Volkswagen Group’s battery company, PowerCo. The deal will allow PowerCo. to manufacture enough QuantamScape designed batteries worldwide to power up to 1 million electric vehicles a year! https://lnkd.in/gZVw_f_v As a reminder, QuantamScape batteries do not require precious metals like cobalt or nickle, can charge to 80% full in 15 minutes, and have achieved more than 1,000 charging cycles with 95 percent of the initial battery capacity intact. PowerCo. believes that depending on the model, an electric car could drive more than 500,000 kilometers on one of the batteries without any noticeable loss of range. This feels like a sea change to me - Lets see how fast VW cars hit the road with this technology on board and how quickly others follow!
