History of Russian water sports federations’ unification The Russian swimming federations used to function as autonomous and independent from each other until 2024. For comparison, the world’s governing body of swimming sports, World Aquatics, is a single organization today that oversees six sports: swimming, synchronized swimming, water polo, diving, open water swimming and extreme high diving. On October 1, 2024, President of the Russian Swimming Federation Vladimir Salnikov announced a decision to unify all Russian sports swimming federations into a single body. He noted at that time "that this measure could be a logical continuation of the integration processes which started following the unification of the gymnastics federations [in October 2024]," adding that this move would "provide for stronger and more coordinated structure that can effectively develop our sporting disciplines." According to Salnikov, the unification of federations will contribute not only to the consolidation of resources and simplification of administrative procedures, but will also improve the quality of training and competition processes. Russian Water Polo Federation President Sharonov said earlier he hoped that the merger "will give a new impetus to the development of water polo." Druzhinin, the chief of the Russian Diving Federation noted that it "would only be for the benefit" and "will be in line with international trends, and will promote further our communications with the World Aquatics." Olga Brusnikina, President of the FSPR, also stated that the merger was the best thing. Brusnikina, the Russian Synchronized Swimming Federation, also pointed out the feasibility of unifying. Russian Sports Minister Mikhail Degtyarev announced on October 1 his support for the initiative to unify the country’s federations of water sports. The minister stated that such a move "would help achieve better results, primarily in the development of children's and youth sports, and will increase popularity among the people." 𝗜𝘀 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘀 𝗦𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗦𝘄𝗶𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿𝘀? 𝗔 𝗗𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗢𝗹𝘆𝗺𝗽𝗶𝗰 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗧𝗟;𝗗𝗥: Yes, but we are not sure why yet. To all my fellow swimming fans or anyone who is also confused about the slower-than-expected swimming times at the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics, this one's for you. There's a popular theory floating around that the Paris pool might be "slow" due to its shallower depth compared to pools from previous Olympics. I decided to 𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 𝘪𝘯𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 investigate whether athletes are indeed performing slower across all swimming events in Paris or if we're just overreacting to a few high-profile events and the small number of new world records. By using the time differences between each athlete’s Olympic performance and their qualifying time, I compared the results between Paris and Tokyo Olympics. This includes analyzing data for all finalists and semi-finalists, as well as athletes who competed in the same events at both Games. Indeed, swimmers on average performed 0.86 seconds slower at the Paris Olympics compared to Tokyo, and swimmers who competed in same events at both Tokyo and Paris Olympics had an average time increase of 0.79 seconds across all events. While the results may not seem as much, in swimming even a hundredth of a second can often define success from failure. This perhaps could begin to explain the public's disbelief in the Olympics swimming results so far. P.S.: I probably should have posted this on Twitter, but I don't have it, and I don't have Instagram, so really this was my only choice. As always, let me know what you think!

How expensive can swimming be…? Swimming in the Seine has been banned for over a century because the water quality was about as appealing as…a soggy baguette! But Paris made a bold move! Paris splashed out 1.4 billion € to clean up the river for the Olympics! Yep – the triathlon and marathon swimming events will take place right in the once-dodgy Seine! The secret weapon? A colossal tank the size of 20 Olympic swimming pools! This bad boy gobbles up (most of) the dirty water that usually goes gurgling into the river after a heavy rain, keeping the Seine from turning into a giant, murky soup. Now, here's the kicker: The recent rainfalls during and after the Olympic Games opening ceremony pushed the system and caused a spike of coliform bacteria. This caused the recent postponement of the triathlon events! So, while significant efforts have been made to improve water quality, there is still a possibility that the Seine may not be completely clean for swimming.

In 2021, Swimming Australia released its 2022-2032 (Our Decade of Opportunity) Strategic Plan. Swimming Victoria (SV) supports the direction Swimming Australia is taking to ‘inspire Australia to swim’ as we power towards the 2032 home Olympic and Paralympic Games. ‘Swimming 2028 - Inspiring Victoria to Swim’, reflects this alignment and outlines Swimming Victoria’s Strategic Plan for 2021 – 2028. This Strategic Plan was developed after a time of unprecedented change which started with the 2020 Victorian bushfires, followed by the COVID-19 pandemic. It was updated in 2023, at a different stage of pandemic recovery, while Victoria was in the midst of a cost-of-living crisis, experiencing a weakened economy and floods were challenging the sustainability of various aspects of the aquatic industry. View the updated plan here: https://bit.ly/4aJz8M5 We are pleased to release the Swimming Victoria – Inspiring Victoria to Swim Strategy Progress Report May 2024, which charts our progress over the past six months. When asking candidates the simple question, "why construction?", I often hear their passion for construction comes from relishing the journey from conception to completion. However, it's articles like these that truly highlight the exceptional aspects of our field. It's incredibly humbling hearing from the end users as to why each project holds such significance for them! #swimming #community #construction #designandbuild
"There are not many pools you can jump down the bottom of one end and see all the way to the other end" states swimming World Champion Lewis Clareburt following the recent 2024 Apollo Projects Swimming Championships. I'm no swimming expert. In fact, I can barely make it across the pool these days without help from my flippers or a float. But, I'm in my total awe of what the USA Swimming team accomplished at the #ParisOlympics this year. Lots of standing records broken and new GOATs emerged (h/t to Stanford Athletics Katie Ledecky among others!). And, did you see that final women's 400x100 relay? These incredible swimmers and teammates not only secured another Gold and bested their rival Australia in total wins (a big deal), they also broke World Record and posted personal bests on the final day of the meet when they are presumably totally exhausted from their other races! There's something extra awesome about that, and makes me wonder why that is, and how I can bring some of their magic into my own life (even as a total non-swimmer). 🏊♂️ Perhaps it speaks to the positive pull of contributing to something bigger than yourself? Competing for your team, your country and your sport? 🏊♂️ Maybe it's the intangible boost of having full trust and belief in others that you've trained with for years. And how knowing that their belief and trust in you makes you better, too. 🏊♀️ The importance of knowing that part of your job is setting your partners up for success so they can do their parts, too. The total performance is more than just the sum of individual parts - it's the interstitials too. The 2024 Olympics swimming is officially over, but the legacy and appreciation for what they've done - and what we can continue to learn from them continues. https://lnkd.in/dJDQiF2r
