Last week Red Bull built a gigantic 3,658 ft (1,115 meter) high ski jump in Iceland to set a new record. The video is magnificent. ❄️⛷️🏆 Ryōyū Kobayashi is one of the greatest ski jumpers of all time, having won 31 World Cup competitions, the World Cup overall title twice, and individual olympics gold medalist. At Hlidarfjall Akureyri in northern Iceland, the snow-covered takeoff launched Kobayashi to soar to a record breaking 291 meters with a top takeoff speed of 107 km/h. Spectacular ski jumping involves several #physics principles - primarily from mechanics and aerodynamics. ⛷️ Gravity: The force of gravity pulls the jumper downwards. The vertical motion of the jump can be described by the equations of projectile motion. 🚫 Drag: As the jumper soars through the air, air resistance (or drag) acts opposite to the direction of motion, which reduces the horizontal velocity over time. ✈️ Lift: Ski jumpers spread their skis in a "V" shape to maximize the surface area interacting with the air. This increases lift, much like an airplane wing, helping them stay airborne longer and travel further. 📐 Launch Angle: The angle of the jump at takeoff is crucial. A too high angle will result in a shorter horizontal distance due to more time spent in vertical motion, while a too low angle minimizes the time in the air. ⏩ Initial Velocity: The speed at takeoff (which in this case was 107 km/h) is a critical factor in determining the range of the jump. Higher initial speeds generally allow for longer jumps. 💡Calculating Ski Jumps... In a typical ski jump scenario where the jumper is not just dropping vertically but launching off a slope, both the horizontal velocity and the initial vertical velocity contribute to the jump's trajectory. Time of flight (t) formula... t = (v0y + SQRT(v0y^2 + 2gh)) / g This calculates the total time until the jumper hits the ground, starting from an initial height (h) with an initial vertical velocity (v0y). The vertical component of the initial velocity could be zero if the jump starts horizontally, but in ski jumps there's typically an initial vertical component due to the ramp angle. So, to calculate v0y vertical component, I can use the launch angle θ along with the total initial velocity (v0). The formula for this is derived from the basic trigonometric relationship in vector decomposition which is: v0y = v0 • sin(θ) Using 29.72 m/s (initial velocity converted from 107 km/h) and θ =10 degrees (launch angle but in radians), I get... = 29.72 × sin (0.1745) = ~ 5.16 m/s So this result gives us the upward component of the initial velocity. And plugging this into time of flight equation, I get approx 15.61 seconds which is fairly close to his actual flight of time of 10 sec. Of course this is all super simplified. In reality much more complex interplay of aerodynamics, lift, and optimal body positioning will significantly affect the distance beyond simple projectile motion calcs. #aerospace #stem

Is this scene in #Zurich #bike-friendly? It features wayfinding for cyclists. Trams and delivery trucks are common here, but many other people are riding their #bikes. Look at what the arrows point to. The one of the left is an active #tram track. The one on the right is a storm #sewer grate with the ribs running parallel to the path of cyclists. The ribs are in a bit of a wavy pattern, but someone using narrow tires would probably get a jolt if they strayed over it. This orientation is common throughout the city. So, is this satisfactory #infrastructure for cycling? If not, what stakeholders need to be engaged to remedy the situation? What might this say about compatibility between modes?
