ICYMI: The National Ready Mixed Concrete Association (NRMCA) will get $9.63M in federal grant dollars from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) aimed at “Reducing Embodied Greenhouse Gas Emissions in Construction Materials and Products.” Through the Inflation Reduction Act, the grant will fund a five-year project managed by NRMCA and supported by its Build With Strength initiative which includes a team of concrete experts to educate the architectural and engineering communities on designing and specifying low carbon concrete. As detailed in NRMCA’s announcement, “Through this five-year project, NRMCA proposes to increase the quantity and robustness of ready-mix concrete Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) by providing grants to producers to create EPDs from an additional 3,000 plants (up from 1,500 currently). NRMCA plans to provide data quality management oversight and training, as well as education for producers by training additional EPD verifiers and certifying up to 500 EPD specialists through an online education system. NRMCA also plans to enhance its existing low-carbon concrete tool and host five low-carbon concrete training workshops per year for five years. The NRMCA Low Carbon Concrete Event in State College on May 15 will have important sessions for those in the concrete industry like this one...⬇ NRMCA (Matt Lemay)  An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is a communication document that quantifies environmental impact data from manufacturing a product. It is a summarized report extracted from an in-depth Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) that complies with the ISO 14040 series. Although environmental disclosure can found in a variety of reports, they are most often cited as an Industry-Average EPD, or preferably, a Product-Specific EPD. EPDs are being specified in green building standards and codes (LEED, IGCC) v4, advocacy initiatives (Architecture 2030 Challenge for Products) and even referenced in State and Local legislation. Really interesting to see the state of play in Australia having seen recent posts on WasteMINZ in NZ from James Blackwell CEnvP SC and others. CIRIA C809 has hopefully gone some way to bring complex guidance and good practice together for the UK. However this is only a snapshot based on regulatory provisions at a point in time, whereas organisations such as Society for the Environment (SocEnv) are driving the national conversation on how we may reach better outcomes with supporting legislation and policy. However allied with this we need to see an upshift in and industry knowledge, behaviours and attitudes to this finite resource. Perhaps (?!) for the UK this could all fall into place by the end of this decade, it’s a stated Government strategic aim, but much needs to happen in the interim. A new one-pager created by the Reduced Carbon Concrete Consortium (RC3) covers the utility of environmental product declarations (EPDs) for pavement decision-making.
