How to secure Europe’s railways? European rail infrastructure CEOs discussed in Vienna the current challenges and priorities of the sector to deliver a resilient and high-performing rail network for EU citizens and businesses: 👉 Need for preparedness and resilience to address weather extremes and other challenges such as cybersecurity and sabotage. 👉 Need for collaboration and knowledge sharing among European Infrastructure Managers to design and maintain resilient infrastructure. 👉 Need for adequate and coordinated funding to establish high-speed connections between European capitals, the Trans-European Transport Network #TEN_T and further digitalise rail. The High-Level Infrastructure Meeting 2024 was hosted by the Austrian rail infrastructure manager ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG. Co-organised by CER and EIM, this annual meeting serves as a platform for sharing information and experiences, aiming to develop common solutions to enhance rail traffic in Europe. Recent solar flares have heightened our awareness of the impacts space weather can have on critical infrastructure, especially industries which rely upon GPS. This underscores the government's emphasis on the importance of understanding potential impacts, contingency planning and alternative technology solutions to ensure continuity of operations in the event of significant geomagnetic disturbances. ☀️ In light of these events, it's crucial to revisit the Federal Positioning, Navigation, and Timing Services Acquisitions Guidance released in February 2024. We are proud to share that OTH team member Percina Curtis-Diggs facilitated the development of this vital guidance (V1.0) in support of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency's National Risk Management Center's Risk Services Initiatives and its PNT Contract Language Development Working Group. Aligned with Presidential Executive Order 13905, this guide helps federal departments, SLTT organizations, PNT program managers, acquisition professionals, and contract bidders assess their PNT dependencies and establish resilience requirements. The North Sea is a strategic space in the green energy transition and an increasingly industrialized infrastructure space. In many ways the regional sea is a laboratory for how to organize critical maritime infrastructure protection (CMIP). Last week we held our 2nd symposium on the North Sea, as part of the partnership of the University of Copenhagen, the University of Edinburgh, and SafeSeas. The event brought 45 experts from different industries, governments and academia together to review the current CMIP solutions and discuss strategic gaps and how to address them. Read the event summary here: https://lnkd.in/d__vY_eX Some key insights ⚓The level of threats for deliberate attacks on infrastructures remains contested ⚓ There's plenty of legal gaps, e.g. in regards to EEZ. ⚓Several new reporting systems aim at enhancing threat detection, but create risks of duplication. ⚓Too much surveillance risks driving up renewable energy prices #shipping #windenergy #cables #oil #greyzone #marsec #maritimesecurity #NorthSea #greentransition Alistair Morris Andrew Neal Brendon Largue Chloe Oakshett Cian FitzGerald David Doran Tutill David Emily Holland Francois-Joseph Fürry Frank Sill Torres Gabriela Argüello Gillian White Izabela Surwillo, PhD Jeroen van Overloop Katriona Edlmann Kyle Parker Lisa Christensen Mariia Vladymyrova Matthew Parker Michael Bullock Mikkel Andersen Robert Bates Stephen Close Steve Yearley Tim Edmunds Tobias Liebetrau Subhash Lakshminarayana Veronika Slakaityte Youna LYONS (PhD)

Two undersea data cables in the Baltic Sea have been damaged, raising concerns of sabotage amid heightened European tensions. Finland’s Cinia Oy detected a fault in the 1,173 km C-Lion1 cable linking Helsinki to Rostock, Germany, on November 18, 2024. Meanwhile, Lithuania's Telia Lietuva reported damage to a cable connecting Lithuania to Sweden’s Gotland Island on November 17. Investigations point to possible external interference, with repairs expected to take 5–15 days. Authorities suspect hybrid warfare amid increased threats to critical infrastructure, echoing past Baltic Sea incidents like pipeline damage. Redundant systems have mitigated disruptions, but concerns over security remain. Despite ongoing #geopolitical issues in the region surrounding the #RedSea, it remains a major #transitroute powering the #globaleconomy. Every year, around 17,000 ships pass through the #SuezCanal, accounting for 12% to 15% of #globaltrade. The vast majority of vessels transit the Red Sea without incident. Since the crisis started in October, 2023, there have been 60 such security instances—representing a very small fraction of the total traffic which passes through the Red Sea during this period. Moreover, from the instances reported, very few can be considered critical. Click on the link below to read more https://lnkd.in/dgEQybSC

At the Nordic-Baltic summit, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk proposed a patrol mission to protect critical infrastructure in the Baltic Sea. This initiative isn’t just about security—it’s about collaboration and strengthening the region’s resilience in an ever-changing world. It’s a step in the right direction to safeguard the unseen lifelines that power our daily lives. 🌍⚓ Should this also include restricting access to strategic chokepoints like the Danish Straits for vessels flagged by nations with questionable intentions? Undersea infrastructure is necessary for modern civilization, acting as both a source and a conduit of energy and as the nervous system of global communications. The West’s enemies realize this already, and are acting accordingly. If the West doesn’t catch up, it will lose out in a critical dimension of global security. https://archive.ph/QdbYo

Subsea infrastructure is inherently vulnerable, whether due to sabotage or accidents, and its disruptions can impact countless lives. 💡 Building resilience is not a given—it requires deliberate efforts at both national and regional levels, as well as coordination across multiple sectors. 💡 Recognizing this, the Nordic and Baltic ministers responsible for digitization have taken an important first step toward strengthening regional cooperation, ensuring we are better prepared to address these challenges in the future. Strengthening the Security of Undersea Communication Cables in the Nordic-Baltic Region 🌊🔒 Recent events in the Baltic Sea have underscored the critical need to protect subsea communication cables, which form the backbone of our digital connectivity. At a recent meeting in Stockholm, the Nordic and Baltic Ministers of Digitalisation agreed to strengthen regional cooperation to safeguard this essential infrastructure. In their joint statement, the ministers emphasized the importance of: Building robust, resilient, and redundant cable systems. Ensuring secure supply chains for development, maintenance, and repair. Collaborating with the EU and NATO to address growing security challenges. 👉 As Karen Ellemann, Secretary General of the Nordic Council of Ministers, highlighted: "Our region's strength lies in collaboration. By working together, we enhance resilience and ensure that our critical infrastructure is secure, reliable, and future-ready." This cooperation is a vital step toward realizing the Nordic Council of Ministers' Vision 2030: to be the world's most digitally integrated and sustainable region.
