Busan Port aims to be world's largest container handling port To maintain Busan Port’s reputation as a global transshipment hub and its competitiveness, there is the need to pursue strategies that connect the development of the new and existing ports. Around $10B (14T won) will be allocated to expand Busan Port, aiming to achieve the world’s largest container handling capacity by 2045. A new port will be built in Changwon and will be integrated with the existing Busan Port to create a mega port to double the current cargo handling capacity. The mega port will accommodate 66 vessels from the current 40. The berth length will be 25.5 km, up from the current 18.8 km, reported Container News.

Many new connections were formed with like-minded professionals within the maritime & offshore industry. Here are some interesting facts about the industry in Thailand, which you may not have known: 1️⃣ 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝟱 𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗲. Its largest port is located in Laem Chabang, which is ranked as 20th largest port in the world. It can handle approximately 6.9 million TEU per year. In 2019, the market value of Thai maritime transportation earned about THB 263.6 billion, according to SCG Logistics. 2️⃣ 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗻𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗹𝘀𝗼 𝗱𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆. The country is focusing on ship repairing rather than building new ships due to its abundance of skilled craftsmanship and companies can constantly earn profits in a long term. 3️⃣ 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗿𝗱 𝗣𝗵𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗟𝗮𝗲𝗺 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗯𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗕𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗮𝗻 𝗔𝗦𝗘𝗔𝗡 𝗠𝗲𝗴𝗮-𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁. Port Authority of Thailand (PAT) also has a plan to invest in Laem Chabang port expansion on the east side of Thai Gulf. Two phases of Laem Chabang seaport expansion projected have been developed, which expand its capacity up to 10 million TEU per year, and now it is working on the third phase of construction. After completing the third phase of development expected in 2025, Laem Chabang port is expected to double size its capacity to accommodate up to 18 million TEUs per year. In summary, Thailand's favorable position along important transport routes has enabled it to attract growth in its maritime industry. The PAT has been working to improve its port infrastructure to maintain the necessary logistics capacity to compete in the world market. Government announced that Busan port is planning to develop a new container terminal by 2045 but current Busan port is suffering from overcapacity due to recently opened 2 new terminal operators. How can we sure that Busan port will secure enough volume to lead Busan to build a new terminal by 2045? As Busan New Port has 7 different terminal operators, how government force them merge together? First thing is first, Government should look to optimize existing container terminals in Busan to cope with challenging Shipping alliances reshuffling.

MPA to Permit Night Movement of Line-Towed Container Barges at #PasirPanjang Terminal The total number of containers handled by the Port of Singapore in the first seven months of 2024 amounted to 23.82 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), marking a significant 6.1% increase in container volumes over the same period last year. Most container vessels completed their simultaneous cargo handling and bunkering within a day of arrival. The average wait time for container berths at port has been reduced to less than one day in July 2024. These improvements are due to measures undertaken by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore and PSA Singapore, such as the commissioning new berths at Tuas Port, reactivating berths and yard spaces at Keppel Terminal, increasing manpower capacity and working with shipping and feeder lines on the scheduling for operations..... https://bit.ly/4cQRH1Z Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) #Singapore #Ports #Shipping #SoutheastAsia

Got a bit nostalgic looking at the picture of the Busan (South Korea) port and remembering a memorable terminal #automation project there delivered eons ago. Fast forward to today and the growth of Busan port as a major transshipment hub is entering a new chapter. And the gateway activity of this port is nothing to sneeze at either, as Korean export goods are sought after in the Americas and Europe. Both types of activities called for more space for a while, but the shift in U.S. strategic sourcing added an extra impetus. After all the necessary civil works and terminal installation, the whole port will have the capacity to accommodate 66 vessels, up from the current limit of 40. The total berths length will also be extended to 25.5 km, compared to the current 18.8 km. This expansion nicely dovetails with surging capacity demand reported by HMM and the update of the proforma 2025 network schedule by MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company featuring Busan in the updated offering of additional direct connections from South Korea to ports worldwide. South Korean terminals were never shy about trying out and implementing innovative #equipment automation solutions and vessel-berth interface solutions. Will be looking forward to seeing what this expansion will bring out in the technological advances in terminal #operations
