Could AI be the missing piece in the recycling puzzle? 🧩 Experts are saying "yes" with numbers back it up, and I am flat out excited for this quantum circularity leap!
My colleague Rey Banatao from X, the moonshot factory joined Rebecca Hu at Glacier, Matanya Horowitz at AMP, Jiri Foukner at Siemens, and our friend Jon Powell, Ph.D. to showcase how technology is forging a circular future - today. Here's how:
🟢 Turbocharged sorting: Robots equipped with AI can sort recyclables with lightning speed and near-perfect accuracy, potentially reaching purities of 90%+. ✨ This leads to higher-quality recycled materials and increased revenue/cost savings for MRFs and recycling facilities.
🟢 Predictive analytics for optimal recycling: AI can predict how different materials will behave in the recycling process – helping facilities optimize routes and recycling processes. This could drastically reduce contamination and increase resource/energy recovery. 🔮
🟢 Unleashing collaboration: AI provides the data insights needed to forge stronger partnerships & connected insights between recycling facilities, brands, municipalities, & us - the consumers. This could drive system-wide efficiency gains across the entire value chain. 🤝
In my role at Google, I get to leverage technology to help the world recycle more and recycle right. Increasingly, AI is one of the key technology levers that we have to foster a more sustainable future and unlock circularity opportunities that we've previously only been able to dream up. #ILoveMyJob!!! ♻️🌎
