Ever visited the ocean and seaweed brushed up against your leg? Yuck. But seaweed may become one of the core materials for packaging, since it’s found globally, grows quickly, and is not in any danger of depletion. Seaweed packaging is one of five trends highlighted in the first Sustainable Packaging Coalition’s Packaging Innovation Trends Report. It’s interesting reading. For example, the SPC predicts machine learning combined with robots doing the sorting at recycling facilities will identify more recyclable materials among those currently sent to landfills—increasing recycling rates.
