Excited to share the op-ed authored with Ana Žbona highlighting why Indigenous Peoples' rights must be at the center of the energy transition. The op-ed includes key elements from the study "Exploring shared prosperity: Indigenous leadership and partnerships for a just transition," published between the Business & Human Rights Resource Centre and The Indigenous Peoples Rights International. Inspiring experiences such as the Tauhara North No. 2 Trust in Aotearoa and the Dokis Nation in Canada demonstrate how Indigenous Peoples' are leading through self-determination projects aligned with the energy transition.
"A rights-based approach, commitment to equitable benefit sharing, and co-ownership of renewable energy projects, are essential in ensuring the transition is not just fast but also fair. The first movers are already working with Indigenous Peoples, and with non-Indigenous communities, securing their projects’ success by investing in trust and partnerships." Indigenous Peoples' leadership and their rights are key to the energy transition - and respecting both makes good business sense. How can clean energy projects build lasting and meaningful relationships with First Nations communities? By collaborating with local stakeholders, including the Ngadjuri Nation, Neoen Australia’s Goyder South wind farm has helped create a new public national park. Neoen has transferred ownership of its purchased land to the SA Government, which will manage the park in consultation with the Ngadjuri Nation. Goyder South is an example of how developers can be imaginative with their projects and think outside the box on community engagement. Every project is different, but there are always opportunities to build strong social license. When they are built on true collaborations, renewable energy projects can bring real benefits to local communities, and in cases like Goyder South, help pair the essential work of the energy transition with the essential work of reconciliation. It’s encouraging to see First Nations people playing a pivotal role in Australia’s green transition, particularly as renewable energy projects could have significant economic and social benefits for our Indigenous populations. Hopefully Australia can follow Canada’s example where Indigenous participation in these types of projects is as high as one in five – demonstrating how important it is to give First Nations people a voice and ownership in the transition to renewable energy sources. #renewableenergy #greentransition #Indigenous

One of our two large-scale renewables-powered green hydrogen hubs in Australia, the Western Green Energy Hub (www.wgeh.com.au), yesterday announced signature of new Collaboration Agreement with the Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), Korea’s largest energy utility. Building on the MOU signed in July 2023, this new agreement sets the stage for a detailed feasibility study for Stage 1 of the project, which aims to generate around 6GW of hybrid wind and solar power, and use that power to produce 330,000 tons per annum of zero-emissions green hydrogen. Tim Horneman, CWP Global's Regional President for the APAC region, and a member of the Board of Directors for the WGEH project, commented: "This new collaboration with KEPCO underscores the potential of the WGEH project to help build a corridor of new green industrial trade between Australia and the growing green fuels market in East Asia. By combining our renewable energy expertise with KEPCO’s extensive infrastructure experience, we're not just advancing a project, we're positioning Australia as a leader in green hydrogen." This new partnership aligns with Australia’s aspiration to decarbonise its trade balance sheet in line with the goal to achieve net zero GHG emissions by 2050, and demonstrates the value of deep cooperation with, and participation by, First Nations communities in projects to accelerate the energy transition. Uniquely, the Mirning People hold a 10 per cent shareholding and a permanent Board seat in the WGEH project’s development company. #GreenHydrogen #RenewableEnergy #Sustainability #CWPGlobal #KEPCO #WGEH #EnergyTransition #Australia

Compared with its growing #fossil fuel fortune, #Norway’s direct investments in #renewable energy in the Global South are microscopic. The country’s trillion-dollar Oil Fund is barred from such ventures and aid-financed green projects in developing countries are viewed as an expense, rather than a way of diversifying the oil fortune and even making profit. Tiny adjustments in these “irrational” rules could free up billions of dollars for wind and solar projects in #emergingeconomies, but no such changes are in sight. Some have called for Norway to give away part of its fossil fuel fortune. Others propose that at a time when the world is screaming for capital for green projects and no other democratic state has more of it at hand than Norway, some of this fossil fuel wealth should be invested in renewables and other green projects around the world. This story investigates why this is not happening; what portion of the Norwegian state’s unprecedented fossil fuel wealth is reallocated as direct investments in renewable energy projects in the Global South and what is preventing these investments from growing. To understand #Norway’s engagement in green energy, it is also necessary to examine two large companies controlled by the Norwegian state: the fossil fuel company Equinor and the renewable utility Statkraft. 🌟 Spotlighting Community Impact in Gladstone! 🌟 Economic Development Queensland (EDQ) is proud to support Queensland’s renewable energy future through strategic partnerships like our collaboration with ACCIONA Energy. Their 380MW Aldoga Solar Farm is being developed on EDQ-owned land through a 30-year lease, repurposing underutilised land to drive economic growth, create jobs, and support Queensland’s renewable energy targets. This $500M flagship renewable energy project will contribute to Queensland’s 50% renewable energy target by 2030 and avoid 934,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions in the process. But it’s not just about energy. Since 2002, Acciona Energia’s Small Grants Program has invested over $4.1 million into local communities. This year, they’ve strengthened their commitment to Gladstone by supporting 12 local organisations, driving impactful projects in health, education, sustainability, and cultural development. At EDQ, we are proud to prioritise partnerships that deliver long-term social, economic, and environmental outcomes. This partnership is a prime example of how strategic collaborations can unlock opportunities for communities and contribute to Queensland’s sustainable growth. Some of the grant recipients include AUSSIE HELPERS LTD, Integreat Queensland, and the Gladstone Australian Men's Shed Association (AMSA). #ACCIONAEnergia #MarketLeadership #GrowingEnterprise #RenewableEnergy
