Today Grohe Team Ocean met up with our Saxion Learning Community International Water Technology. After students presented their projects on 1)decentralized water treatment: BluElephant, 2) monitoring systems for water quality, 3)modules for hydroponic vegetable growing and 4)pergolas for water storage and cooling… Bela and Wilco took us on their rowing expeditions across the Rhine (from summit to source) and from California to Hawaii (from source to summit). using only 6 liters of water per person per day, compared to our 130 liters of water per person per day. All this to raise awareness about water as THE source of life. We are thrilled to announce that the Clean Water Technology | Te Mana of te Wai team, led by Professor Aisling (Ash) O'Sullivan, has received an international award for their research titled “Cellulosic waste materials for nitrate removal from water” Authors: Jakub Maculewicz, Aisling (Ash) O'Sullivan, Kien Tat Wai and Ricardo Bello-Mendoza (In the picture: Dr Jakub Maculewicz, postdoctoral fellow) This cross-disciplinary, nationwide team includes experts from various institutions across New Zealand. They investigated biobased cellulosic materials to tackle nitrate pollution in water sources, starting with various food waste materials from New Zealand industries. Their work has led to the development of highly effective materials for nitrate removal. Nitrate contamination is a critical global issue affecting both environmental and human health. By exploring innovative, eco-friendly solutions, this research supports the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, and SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation). This recognition underscores the potential of their work to significantly impact water treatment practices worldwide. As the Māori whakataukī says, "Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi, engari kē he toa takitini" – my strength is not as an individual, but as a collective. ‘A display of commitment to #ecology and transformative research’ will look to transform #sustainable #agriculture. The Cornwall College University Centre for Excellence in Research and Knowledge Transfer, new state of the art laboratories have opened at the #EdenProject. Andy Jasper, CEO of Eden Project, kickstarted the official ribbon cutting ceremony last week, and made it clear the new facility would help deliver and support community-focused education and environmental stewardship. ‘I am incredibly proud of our partnership the Eden Project has with #CornwallCollege, with the brilliant students, now the cutting-edge laboratories (heated by our own geothermal plant) which will take things to the next level,’ said Jasper. ‘This campus now equips students with the tools, knowledge, and hands-on experience to lead in soil science, #biodiversity restoration, and regenerative horticultural practices,’ he continued. Together, we are shaping a brighter, more sustainable future for our communities and our planet and I feel there has never been a better time or place to study the science, art and practice of horticulture.’ Among other skillsets, the next generation of plant scientists, ecologists and soil experts will be trained at the institution, helping drive and develop new solutions at a time when biodiversity and nature restoration is a priority for central and local governments. The opening is possible thanks to a £574,820 investment from the Cornwall and #IslesofScilly Growth Programme, funded by Downing Street under the #UK Shared Prosperity Fund. ‘I am delighted that our Good Growth Programme has been able to fund this new facility, aiding local growers and farmers in boosting their productivity,’ said Cllr Louis Gardner, Cornwall Council portfolio holder for the economy. ‘The agri-food industry is crucial to Cornwall’s economy and natural environment, and fostering innovation in this sector will pave the way for a more prosperous future.’

Meet Tshireletso Madumo(Pr.Nat.Sci.), a dedicated professional natural scientist with a focus on green chemistry and sustainability. Earlier this year, Tshireletso was selected as an ACS Sustainability Star based on her commitment to developing innovative, environmentally friendly solutions that tackle critical challenges in water treatment. “My work is at the intersection of chemistry, sustainability, and environmental protection,” she said. “I am focused on designing and implementing cutting-edge water treatment technologies that utilize sustainable materials and processes, reducing the harmful environmental impact traditionally associated with water purification. Through my research, I strive to create solutions that not only solve water-related issues but also contribute to the broader global sustainability agenda.” Tshireletso’s research focuses on removing heavy metals from wastewater, especially mitigating Cr(VI) pollution. Her work on novel metal organic frameworks and nanocomposites shows promise for efficient industrial wastewater treatment. With a passion for the UN Sustainable Development Goals (especially Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation), she hopes to make a tangible, positive difference in both local and global communities. In addition to her scientific achievements, Tshireletso is proud to serve as the Gauteng Provincial Young Water Professionals South Africa Leader, a role related to water sustainability and environmental conservation that shows her emerging leadership in the field. “I am particularly excited about the GCS platform's ability to foster global collaboration and knowledge sharing among experts in the fields of chemistry and engineering,” Tshireletso said. “The potential for cross-disciplinary partnerships and access to mentorship and funding opportunities provides a unique environment to amplify the impact of sustainability-focused research.
