This paper explores bias in the causal judgements of humans and LLMs by examining two structures in CBNs: Canonical Chain (A→B→C) and Common Cause (A←B→C) networks. Given B, C is independent of A. Human often ignore such independence. The authors tested this bias with both human studies and LLM experiments. https://lnkd.in/emheDtAJ

'Greatest denial of access to justice in our country is in civil and commercial cases which are left hanging indefinitely in our courts. This is not good for commerce and is not good for investment. If we can resolve political cases within 180 days, I think as a legal profession we ought to come an agreement; maybe 5 or 6 years.' - Prof Yemi Akinseye-George SAN at the 18th Conferment of Honorary Institute Fellowship and Founders' Day Lecture 2024.

A fantastic article on the need to urgently (re)situate universities. The entire global HE sector is in crisis; we are feeling this perhaps harder than many, in the UK. Let's rethink what we are, what we are doing, and how we do it through situatedness rather than be 'tinned food' universities. This article couldn't be more timely, with recent research emphasising 'place' is the most important factor for students in selecting their university in the UK. We shouldn't take this just as a marketing exercise, e.g. 'shouting about being by the sea!', but recognise how making our place part of what we do, enfolding communities into our curriculum are part of this work (there are already some amazing examples of this at Sussex but we could do this in a more strategic and widespread way, and shout about it more!).
We are asking daring questions with Rebecka Lettevall Annika Olsson about #universities. What are the alternatives today when new answers are needed. Central European University CEU Democracy Institute Protecting Academia at Risk Malmö University https://lnkd.in/dBGj6R52

The joint policy statement by federal policymakers on May 28 is a great step in the right direction! Stephen Diamond, professor from Santa Clara’s Law School, and I are hopeful that an exchange could actually implement the ideas captured in the federal guidelines.
