Safaricom Expands its M-PESA Global Money Transfer Services to Ethiopia Safaricom PLC's M-PESA Global, a mobile money transfer service, has officially launched in Ethiopia, enabling customers to send and receive money between Kenya and Ethiopia. Following a three-month pilot, this expansion is expected to facilitate seamless cross-border transactions to over 190 other countries and strengthen financial integration within East Africa. It aims to support economic growth by offering a more efficient platform for international money transfers. The service is particularly useful for Ethiopians in Kenya and Kenyans in Ethiopia, enabling secure, affordable transactions using mobile wallets. This launch comes at a time when Ethiopia is undergoing foreign exchange reforms, which are likely to encourage wider adoption of digital payments. The collaboration between M-PESA Kenya and Ethiopia is expected to further support these reforms and enhance the region’s digital payment infrastructure. M-PESA Global’s partnerships with Western Union, Skrill, and WorldRemit are expected to provide additional options for users, ensuring broader access to international transfers. It also positions Safaricom as a competitor to Ethiopia's state-owned Telebirr in the mobile money market. To use the service, customers can dial *840# or access M-PESA Global through the MySafaricom App. The minimum amount for transfers is KSH 101 (USD 0.8), with a maximum of KSHS 70 K (~USD 540) per transaction. #MPESA #Safaricom #Ethiopia #MobileMoney #FinancialIntegration #DigitalPayments

We subscribe fully to South African Reserve Bank's 'Digital Payment Roadmap: Towards Inclusive, Accessible, Effective and Sustainable Digital Payments in South Africa' vision: “An integrated and inclusive digital society and economy in Africa that improves the quality of life of Africa’s citizens, strengthens the existing economic sector, enables its diversification and development, and ensures continental ownership with Africa as a producer and not only a consumer in the global economy.” It's what inspired us to start, and what keeps us going 17 years later. #digitalpayments #sustainability #digitaleconomy #southafrica
