Investment in cycling infrastructure does not stop road cyclists from jumping red lights causing potential collisions. A recent video on X involving a road cyclist almost colliding into a pedestrian caught my attention today. The situation is traffic's at standstill, red light, everything is normal and predictable. At the very same moment, a female road cyclist on the opposite side of the road jumps the red light, catching the attention of the male cyclist in this video. He becomes distracted and fails to notice the pedestrian's movements ahead of him. As he pedals hard to gain speed, he loses his balance, posture, technique, and control of the vehicle while attempting to transfer weight to the left pedal. He veers directly towards the pedestrian, coming within 30 centimeters of her toes. The near miss causes the pedestrian to pull her upper body back and raise her arms to protect herself in under 0.3secs. A fellow road cyclist scorns him for not apologizing to stop and check the pedestrian was ok. What could have happened if they collided? The road cyclist would luckily escape with a dented ego and embarrassment. The pedestrian could have suffered bruises, cuts, sprains, soft tissue injuries, fractures, or even fatal head injuries had she fallen backward onto the pavement. So, why did this situation occur and why didn't the cyclist stop and be a good citizen? For a road cyclist, maintaining continuous momentum is crucial for an efficient, effective, and enjoyable ride. Managing speed and distance is a highly specialized skill requiring high levels of judgment, timing, and the ability to anticipate traffic flow. However, when something goes wrong or another road user behaves unpredictably, like a bus, lorry, hgv, articulated trailer, 7.5ton lorry, pick up trucks or light duty trucks the cyclist is fatally outsized. It’s similar to rocking up next to a cruise liner in the sea with a pedalow trying to imitate it. The cyclist outsized the pedestrian in this instance and failed to stop and apologize, because he didn't want to lose the momentum and effort he had gained. This behaviour could be viewed as a selfish and anti social and not positive for the eco system. In contrast, e-bikes and e-scooters offer a more manageable and consistent riding experience, allowing riders to maintain speed comfortably and focus their attention to driving. With their rapid acceleration, dynamic handling, and ease of use, e-transport riders can more easily stop to ensure a pedestrian's well-being and apologize for any near misses. However, between 2019 and 2022, injuries increased fourfold for e-bike users and nearly doubled for e-scooter, representing a spike of 293% and 88%. These tend to be infrequent but severe and must be tackled immediately with Scoot Fit training, investing in riders long term safety. I'm very excited about the future for transport, we're going from the Flintstones to the Jetsons era of transportation.

Conversely, the abundance of cycle racks dotting city streets and plazas offers unparalleled accessibility, but leaves cycles vulnerable to would-be thieves. This tug-of-war between security and convenience has vexed urban planners, cycling advocates, and bike owners alike, sparking the need for innovative solutions that can satisfy both concerns. From bike hangars to expanded, well-lit cycle hubs, the quest to crack the Bike Parking Paradox has become an integral part of building truly bike-friendly cities - ones that encourage pedal-powered transportation by providing the peace of mind and accessibility that cyclists demand. But striking the right balance between safety and convenience is no easy feat. Local governments and urban planners must carefully weigh the needs of cyclists against available space, budgets, and other practical considerations. It's a delicate dance, but one that is crucial to get right if cities hope to encourage more people to ditch their cars in favour of two-wheeled transport. Yes. This! The joy and freedom of riding a bike! If we’re to grow the cycling community (and all the associated health, community and environmental benefits that come with it) we need to have the right regulations, policies and infrastructure in place to not only provide safety, but also ensure the fun factor! “Anyone who rides a bike will know that cycling has uniquely different mobility needs compared to walking and driving… A nuanced understanding of cyclists’ needs requires focusing on making the experience of riding a bike the more appealing, convenient, and attractive mobility option”. “Given that cyclists and vehicles are legally equal users on Australian roads (Carruthers 2017), it is not surprising that cycling infrastructure has fallen under the responsibilities of transport engineers for decades. Unravelling the Cycling City course revealed to me that, in order for new infrastructures to be embraced, there is an urgent need to shift away from the traditional ‘space allocation’ approach of engineers to one that prioritises the rider’s experience and perspective in its design… “The shift in focus “beyond a concern with safe and convenient facilities and complete networks to a more substantial interest in the experience of the environment from a cyclist’s point of view” perfectly articulated my complex frustrations with Australia’s lagging approach… “How lively does the urban environment become when people are riding through it? Within the context of Darwin’s sprawling low-density land-use patterns and lack of pedestrian infrastructure, it’s easy to understand why car dependency dominates”. I reflect back again to the differences between Australia and my recent time cycling in Taiwan; and the ever-important need to integrate transport planning, land use and density. Urban greenways bring about a 'slow life'. Strolling along the greenway, the city's greenery lingers in the eyes, and the green mountains and rivers add poetic charm to life. But when new things develop rapidly, accompanying problems are always difficult to avoid. With more and more leisure and cultural activities entering greenways, the functional carrying capacity and safety issues of greenways have also begun to emerge. At present, the trend of "cycling fever" is entering the streets of cities. Especially on urban greenways, a bicycle with three to five friends shuttling between the lake and mountain scenery is extremely comfortable. But as more and more racing bicycles enter the greenway, and even young people preparing for races use the greenway as a training ground, the greenway can no longer maintain the label of "slow life", but becomes more and more like a "road", and even more and more like an arena. Bicycles belong to non motorized vehicles, but the speed of racing bicycles has surpassed that of electric bicycles. There is even a question on Zhihu: Will road bikes or mountain bikes be recognized as motor vehicles or have standardized design speeds in the future? In urban streets, some racing bicycles are speeding wildly on the outer motor vehicle lanes, bringing a negative image to cycling. In urban greenways, pedestrians who originally wanted to take leisurely walks have to frequently "yield" to racing bicycles, making leisure meaningless. So we see that some urban greenways have issued safety reminders and regulations on bicycle speed limits, and even set up monitoring at risk points such as steep slopes, sharp turns, and level crossings to achieve monitoring of cycling speed.

This pain point has also been regularly expressed by employees entitled to Vapaus bike benefit, who are considering getting a benefit bike but refrain from doing so because there is no safe or suitable storage space for their dream bike at home or work. I’m excited to see Dublin City Council's initiative to expand the BikeBunkers program across the city. As someone who has witnessed numerous bikes being stolen or vandalized, including missing seats and wheels, this is a much-needed development. The new bike bunkers offer secure, covered storage for bicycles, which will (hopefully) significantly reduce theft and provide (relative) peace of mind for cyclists. The plan to install 350 bike bunkers by 2026 is a fantastic step towards promoting cycling and making our city more bike-friendly. By offering a secure storage option for just €100 per year, this initiative will support city-centre living and encourage more people to choose cycling as a sustainable mode of transport. The thoughtful approach to placing these bunkers within a certain radius of applicants, considering factors like street lighting and road busyness, shows a commitment to convenience and safety for all cyclists (BikeBunkers) (Dublin People).
