Deadline to Apply for 2024-25 Scholarships Fast Approaching Students Have More Opportunities Than Ever Before for Educational Support WATERTOWN — High School seniors in Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence counties have just over a week remaining to complete a free application for Community Foundation scholarship support. Members of the graduating class of 2024 who plan to enroll in post-secondary programs this fall must complete their applications through the Community Foundation’s online scholarship portal by next Friday, March 15. The application portal may be accessed at bit.ly/nnycf-scholarships. Tri-county high school seniors who will enroll as full-time undergraduates this fall may apply. Students pursuing technical, trade, or vocational school may also apply and should complete the same application. All students should thoroughly read all application instructions. Students who have achieved all levels of academic success are encouraged to apply. Last year, the Community Foundation partnered to award 900 scholarships totaling nearly $1.4 million that helped more than 600 students attend two- and four-year colleges and universities, as well as technical, trade, and vocational schools and programs. Since 1980, the Community Foundation has awarded more than $22 million in scholarships to students who live in the tri-county region. In addition to its own scholarship awards, the Community Foundation annually administers nearly 500 scholarships established by individual donors, business, and organizations as well as scholarship funds on behalf of 32 school districts across the three counties. “As we near the scholarship deadline, the most important message we want to convey is that there are scholarships available for just about every type of student across the tri-county region,” said Rande S. Don't miss the opportunity to be the recipient of these HKLA awards! First call for application for two HKLA awards. Heleni Linton Bursary 2024 The Bursary is awarded on a competitive basis to full or part-time students of library and information science to assist in their studies. It might help with course fees, short sabbaticals, research materials costs, conference attendance and the like. Applications for the Bursary, which amounts to HK$5,000, will be assessed by considering the potential applicability and contribution of the proposal to the library and information science in our region and the likely impact of the Bursary on the career of the applicant. Hong Kong Library Association Biennial Award 2024 The Biennial Award is set up to address the professional development needs of eligible Full Members of the Association who are practicing at paraprofessional to middle professional levels in the library and information fields. The recipient can utilize the award, normally at HK$10,000, for the professional development of the awardees, such as conference or workshop attendances, overseas professional visits, preparation of a scholarly publication or any professional activities, etc., which are otherwise unlikely to be sponsored by their employers, nor by the other scholarships or awards currently offered by the Association. I’ve advocated for states and the feds to release college scholarship funds to qualified high school students. Why? So that students can start earning college credits while they are in high school. Some have pushed back saying this is double dipping. Nope. It’s early investing. Securing future ROI! High schools are in the best position to help income-eligible students complete college work because they have the staff to support student success. Today was a prime example. While visiting with our super star counselor in Baton Rouge, and two students who earned an associate degree while in our high school, they shared how they received much-needed support from our counselor and our teachers. Our counselor was there when they stumbled. She was there to advocate for their classes/credits. She was there! Our academic staff were there, too. Most higher ed institutions don’t have this level of support for their students. Our high schools do. It’s how our first associate-degree earning student achieved this goal after considering dropping out of our high school. It’s how our bachelor-degree earning student achieved her goal, too. Both considered stopping. But we (our staff) lifted them up during these challenges. Convinced them to push forward. And they did. We have two more students earning bachelor’s degrees this year and six more next year in Gary, Indiana. We have 20% of our Baton Rouge high school students completing their associate degrees this year. Accessing college scholarship funds for high school students makes sense. It isn’t double dipping. It’s making sure those college scholarship funds are well spent. Right now, in Indiana, only 50% of students qualified for the state’s college scholarship fund called 21st Century Scholars, complete college within 6 years. 50%! That’s not good enough! What’s missing? Experience and support. Most students I serve, and whom are eligible for 21st Century Scholars funds, are from homes void of college. They need help navigating college, understanding the rigors of college BEFORE they head off to college. That’s how our students succeed. They learn time management. Self discipline. How to work with others. What a real college professor expects. By being on a real college campus before graduating high school. We are spending K12 funds for our students to earn real college credits. It’s worth it. But I’d like to spend more to remediate those not ready for college and get them into college. Having access to college funds, that already exist for our kids (if they graduate from high school) will free up K12 funds for more remediation and still allow us to continue to help our students do more than high school. This isn’t double dipping. It’s early investing. It’s securing future investment. Ensuring ROI. If our students earn real college degrees while in high school, they will be more employable at an earlier age, and contributing taxpayers to the state at a much earlier age, too!

 No College Scholarships Today! If you have littles playing sports, perhaps you have seen this sign. It is very direct, and an excellent reminder for adults. My favorite one is #5. Too often today, parents get so wrapped up in little Johnny or Jilly's potential, that every play, every miss, or every score carries a lot of weight, and pressure. What if--and I know this is earth shattering--kids just learned the bigger lessons in life from their sporting experience? What if--again, earth shattering--they just had fun and made some friends? I know, I'm such a simpleton. I guess everything has to be competitive because future college scholarships are at stake, but how about we let 10 year olds just be 10? Everyone means well, I know, but it seems to me that sometimes when parents get into the mix, it's hard for coaches to just coach. It's like when we get in the way of God just trying to be God. We tell him he should be doing things our way and question him when he doesn't. Sometimes we can even be quite vocal about it. I'm trying very hard to take the wider approach and ask, "What might God be doing in this situation?" Is he pruning impatience? Does he know that what I am asking for wouldn't be good for me? I have to assume that there is more going on at any given time than what I can see, or understand. This approach can really help if you find yourself frustrated. Take the bird's-eye view and just relax. My experience is that God always know which doors to open for us, and which should remain closed, at least for now. This attitude places us in a position of trusting God, leaving us to worry much less. You might want to give it a try!
