Have you recently undergone a laparoscopic surgery? Wondering what to eat post-op to speed up recovery? This post shares the best diet tips to heal faster after laparoscopy. Laparoscopic procedures like gallbladder removal and hysterectomy are minimally invasive. But surgery of any kind stresses the body. Eating the right nutrients after laparoscopy can boost healing and energy. The key is getting enough calories along with vitamins and minerals. This helps replace depleted nutrients and prevents infection. It also provides the building blocks for tissue repair. However not all foods are created equal after surgery. Some can be hard to digest or irritate the digestive tract. Others lack key nutrients needed for recovery. So what should you eat after laparoscopic surgery? Here are 5 diet tips to recover faster: Eat high-protein foods like eggs, fish, chicken, Greek yogurt and beans. Protein helps rebuild muscle and strength. Choose vitamin C-rich fruits and veggies like citrus, peppers, broccoli and leafy greens. Vitamin C boosts immunity and wound healing. Increase antioxidant-packed berries, tomatoes and sweet potatoes. Antioxidants reduce inflammation and cell damage. Stay hydrated with water, diluted juices and herbal teas. Fluids prevent dehydration and constipation. Avoid fried, greasy, spicy and gas-producing foods. These can irritate the GI tract and cause pain or bloating. Focusing on nutrient-dense whole foods can make a big difference in how quickly you bounce back after laparoscopic surgery. Try incorporating more lean protein, fruits, vegetables, and fluids into your diet. This gives your body the tools it needs to heal. Protein shakes are a fantastic way to meet protein needs when it's hard to get enough whole food in, either due to side effects from obesity medications or post-op bariatric surgery. There's been a lot of chatter about loss of lean body mass with medications used for weight loss - to some extent, this is normal and will occur with any weight loss mechanism. The idea is not to lose weight too quickly but to mitigate the loss by consuming enough calories and protein for a slow and steady loss. What is too much? On average, greater than 1-2 pounds per week. Dietitians can prescribe macronutrients and calorie recommendations to help patients lose weight safely and should always be part of the care team.
