Last night, men, women, and children were burned alive while many of us slept peacefully. The scenes from that tragedy are too horrific to share here, but we cannot look away from reality. This is a reminder that we have the collective power to stand against violence and advocate for peace. If you're unfamiliar with the conflict, now is the time to educate yourself. It’s not as complicated as it may seem. If you already understand, then help others to do the same, and spread the word. Awareness is the first step toward change. If you’re already raising awareness, consider taking the next step by getting involved with peace building initiatives. There are many organisations working tirelessly to bring an end to the violence, and they need support. For the sake of our shared humanity and the lives of innocent children, let’s not remain silent. Every action counts.

Each year, September 30 marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. As this day approaches, we encourage everyone to take steps to recognize and honour the children who never returned home and Survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities. Wearing orange is one way to show your support in commemoration of the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools. In addition to donning orange, other ways you can participate in the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation: • read about the legacy of residential schools • read the summary of the Final Report of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada • learn about Indigenous cultures These steps are a vital component of the reconciliation process. https://bit.ly/2XY4y1K #NDTR #EveryChildMatters

Business leaders, politicians, & media stars are afraid to talk about 1 thing. And that 1 thing can solve the vast majority of our problems. Fatherlessness. Our leaders all want to pretend that it isn’t the biggest problem facing the United States and frankly, the entire world. But it isn’t politically correct to mention. 25% of American children don’t live with a father in the home. That’s nearly 18 million boys and girls. When a child is raised in a fatherless home, she is more likely to: ▪️Live in poverty ▪️End up in jail ▪️Become pregnant as a teen ▪️Drop out of school That’s why CATHOLIC WORLD MISSION INC is developing programs with The Lumen Institute to address this tragedy head on. We are working to build stronger fathers and stronger families by looking to the example of St Joseph. Be sure to check on CatholicWorldMission.org in the upcoming weeks on this program and learn how to help. Because it takes guts to address the real issue. It takes guts to stand up for kids.

From Dr. Wendy Mahoney, interim President and CEO of the National Network to End Domestic Violence (NNEDV): "Housing is extremely limited for survivors, often forcing them to make impossible choices between sleeping outside or suffering continued violence. This is especially true for survivors of color and other marginalized survivors, who are already more likely to experience violence, compounded by systemic inequality that makes it harder to escape and access safe housing. We all deserve a safe place to live, and we can't solve homelessness by punishing people for experiencing it." Learn more about the Johnson v. Grants Pass case here: https://lnkd.in/e3U-MmiK

"How do movements upend myths that reinforce racial stratification? One tool is to construct new narratives, which are spoken or written accounts of a series of events that we tell each other. These narratives filter throughout society via media systems that have transformed and expanded over time." "These media systems help create and sustain dominant narratives that become our commonly understood norms and beliefs, which are then reinforced over time, typically by those who hold some power, but which are also often accepted and legitimized by those without power." Changing the narrative is one of the cornerstones of our disrupting dehumanization framework. When approaching an Indigenous community expect that you’ll need to properly inform, consult, involve, collaborate and empower each other to achieve success. Indigenous peoples are often asked to provide their time and are contacted by multiple institutions. Keep in mind you’ll need to: ✔Build a program or initiative with the support of the community before you begin planning. Avoid bringing a developed plan to a community or nation unless they have asked for it. ✔ Have clear intentions. ✔ Plan time for visiting and relationship-building. ✔ Understand that many First Nations, Inuit and Métis communities may have difficulty trusting non-Indigenous partners or organizations due to both historical and ongoing effects of colonial trauma. ✔ Consider reciprocity and be prepared to explain how your project or initiative benefits the community. ✔ Expect to answer questions about budget availability. #UWaterlooCoop #Coop #EDIR
