For the purpose of some #gameaudio #sounddesign, I had thought about audio that contained and conveyed 𝘦𝘭𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘵𝘺, so I tried to record some rubber bands, thinking I would probably get some rubbery textures from mangling the recordings, but I discovered that I was able to perform some interesting gestures by letting the plucked rubber band swoosh by the microphone, changing the pitch based on tension and proximity. A good example of a somewhat vague recording idea resulting in some surprisingly useful material, which will be used elsewhere for the same project.

Listen to the oldest known recording of a human voice from 1860 before they could even play it back Thomas Edison is often credited with being the first person to record sound. But it was in fact a Frenchman named Edouard-Léon Scott de Martinville who invented sound recording via his phonautograph in 1857 – 20 years before Edison invented his phonograph. When this was recorded, there was no known way of how to yet play back anything. It was more an experiment to try to replicate how the human ear works. With today’s technology, though, we can reverse engineer that to reproduce the sound. This is a 164-year-old recording, many generations ago. Technology itself was still in the era of steam power. Radio, phonographs, gramophones, etc were still a long way away from being invented. See https://lnkd.in/e5fZhfpr (https://lnkd.in/e5fZhfpr) #audio #technology #vintage

This might sound weird, but I've just strangely put into words that I've never had a long-term relationship with one microphone. Funny realization that hit me yesterday listening to recent recordings. Over the years I have used lots of different mics for short bursts of time. My work with mics doesn't involve spending a year with the same mic recording 100s of hours of dialogue or soundscapes or any other specific type of sound. So while I know about a lot of different mics, with some mics I feel like I know relatively little. Part of why I love talking with sound recordists and mic manufactures is because I get to learn so much about mics and other aspects of recording that I don't know. It definitely keeps the Dunning-Kruger effect from seeping in -- for everything thing new I learn there are usually 10-20 more things that I don't know about that same topic. Gonna miss this Schoeps Mikrofone MiniCMIT that I had the pleasure of using for the past few weeks. I'm sure we will rendezvous again soon when it's time to test new gear.
