🏙 𝐆𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐝𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐝 𝐚 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐠𝐥𝐚𝐳𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥 Specialists from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) Institute of Technology in Germany have developed a new polymer-based metamaterial. It consists of microscopic silicone pyramids 10 microns in size (about 1/10 of a hair diameter). The transparency of the metamaterial is 93%, which is 2% more than that of ordinary glass. According to the researchers, the material is able to scatter 73% of incident sunlight, as well as create a comfortable microclimate in the room without additional energy costs. Another of its abilities is passive cooling. Thus, during the tests it was possible to reduce the temperature in the room by 6 degrees Celsius compared to the environment. Another feature of the new material is its ability to clean itself like a lotus leaf. Water on the material collects into droplets, which remove dirt from the surface. In the future, the new development may replace glass components in walls and roofs. The material can simultaneously optimize the use of sunlight in the room, provide passive cooling and reduce dependence on air conditioners. #archtown #innovations
