#30daymapchallenge2024: Daily social mapping project happening every November Day 28: The Blue Planet Map: 🌊 Whale Shark Movements across Gulf of Mexico from 2009-2015 🐋 Data source: Movebank Visualization reference: John Nelson Using GIS, this map tracks the migratory patterns of these gentle giants over six years. By mapping these movements, we can better understand their behavior, identify critical habitats, and pinpoint migration corridors, which are crucial for designing effective conservation strategies.  Did you know? 🧐   The whale shark survives by feeding on tiny plankton. These gentle marine giants generally roam the oceans alone, but they often gather in large numbers in areas rich in plankton, making them prime tourist attractions. Their presence not only indicates abundant plankton but also reflects the overall health of our oceans. As key players in marine ecosystems, whale sharks help maintain ecological balance by consuming large amounts of plankton, which indirectly influences carbon cycling in the oceans. #30DayMapChallenge #BluePlanet #GISMapping #MarineConservation #WhaleSharks #GISForGood #SpatialData #OceanScience #Biodiversity #MovebankData #GulfOfMexico #WildlifeTracking
