You may have seen a report on Good Morning Britain today about the lack of skilled labour in the construction industry. The report suggested that the skills shortage is so great that more than 400,000 have been waiting for over a year for a builder, 301,000 for a plumber, 294,000 for a roofer and 226,000 for an electrician. It’s no surprise to us here at Vantage & Co. As one of Britain's premier SME construction companies, we know that the shortage of skilled labour is a critical issue – and one which needs solving quickly. Our MD Stephen Rankin has climbed the ranks from a humble site labourer to the helm of Vantage and understands the industry's pulse like no other. "In today's dynamic construction environment, the shortage of skilled workers poses a significant obstacle to meeting the demands of our growing infrastructure needs. "As someone who has walked every rung of the ladder in this industry, I can attest to the invaluable role skilled workers play in driving innovation, efficiency, and quality in our projects." The construction industry, often overlooked for its potential career opportunities, offers a wealth of possibilities for individuals seeking fulfilling and lucrative careers. From civil engineering to project management, the breadth of roles is vast and diverse. "At Vantage and Co Group, we firmly believe in nurturing talent and providing pathways for career growth within the construction industry," adds Stephen. "Our success as a company is intrinsically linked to the skills and dedication of our workforce. We are committed to investing in training programmes, and ongoing professional development initiatives to cultivate the next generation of construction professionals. "To anyone considering a career in construction, I say this: Seize the opportunities before you, embrace the challenges with courage and determination, and never underestimate the transformative power of hard work and perseverance."

The construction industry is grappling with a notable shortage of skilled labor, with over 370,000 job openings reported in August alone. Despite a high number of unemployed individuals, many contractors are finding it challenging to locate qualified candidates, resulting in project delays and increased costs. This shortage is not merely about the number of workers; it also concerns the lack of necessary skills. Many of the hard-to-fill positions require specific qualifications, such as those for plumbers, carpenters, electricians, and pipefitters. The situation is further aggravated by an aging workforce and reduced funding for workforce development in construction and related sectors. To combat this shortage, the construction industry is implementing various strategies, including raising wages, advertising jobs on social media, and collaborating with high schools and postsecondary institutions. However, these initiatives will need time to yield results. What measures do you think the construction industry should adopt to attract and retain skilled labor? How can the industry and government collaborate to tackle this issue?

TO THE MINISTER OF INFRASTRUCTURE AND THE RESPONSIBLE FOR CALL FOR TENDER When you are submitting a call for tender, IT SHOULD BE IMPERATIVE AND INCLUDED THAT ALL RESPONSIBLE ON CONSTRUCTION SITES such as bosses, foremen, superintendent, project manager and even the teamleader should be evaluated on their abilities and knowledge and experience, this should be mandatory. The reason that this should be in the clause when submitting a call to tender is because very often it is TAXPAYERS MONEY that is wasted on incompetence coming from hirings of the above mentioned, due to lack of knowledge or experience I have 35 years of experience on construction sites and I have many shocking stories regarding hiring of manager that should never set foot on a construction site. For example, I had a boss that had nooo experience in construction, he was a food delivery guy , hired by DRAGADOS and ended up being a boss for one of Montreals biggest sites ,the REM tunnel, the only reason he got that position is because of Who he knew Not what he knew and NouvLR never checks the competence of anyone hired by DRAGADOS As well on the same construction site , there was also an apprentice on machinery and because of who he knew, he was swiftly given a position as SUPERINTENDENT to manage structural work for a new tunnel with no experience or knowledge of tunnel work.,he does anything he doesn’t know, the results are catastrophic. SO I SUGGEST TO YOU THAT ALL MANAGERIAL POSITIONS ON CONSTRUCTION SITES ARE EVALUATED BY WRITTEN EXAMS BY PROFESSIONALS BY THE MINISTRY OF EDUCATION SO THEY ARE APT TO MANAGE IMPORTANT CONSTRUCTION SITES THIS NONSENSE OF HIRING WHO ONE KNOWS AND NOT WHAT ONE KNOWS IS COSTING TAXPAYERS ALOT OF WASTED MONEY
