"This report provides a first look at how AI adoption has affected productivity in Canadian companies. Using high-quality data from Statistics Canada | Statistique Canada's Survey of Digital Technology and Internet Use and the Business Research Microdata, we looked at companies that adopted AI between early 2020 and late 2021 to understand whether the adoption of AI technologies translated to short-term firm-level productivity gains. Canada’s productivity growth – a key driver of economic prosperity – has stalled. Many private-sector and policy leaders are betting big on AI as the silver bullet for our productivity crisis, but will it pay off? Our latest report, Waiting for Takeoff, Viet Vu, Vivian L., Angus Lockhart, Graham 📊 Dobbs, and Christelle Tessono investigate these assumptions and offer the first evidence of the effects of AI adoption on productivity and employment. The findings might surprise you: in the early 2020 to late 2021 study period, we found there is no conclusive evidence to substantiate the claim that AI makes Canadian companies more productive. While this data pre-dates the Generative AI era, the findings call for caution in asserting that AI adoption at the firm level results in short-term productivity gains. This report is part of the portfolio of work by the Future Skills Centre - Centre des Compétences futures Centre, which is funded by the Government of Canada’s Future Skills Program.
