📍 Iran's Guardian Council (GC, a vetting body) has qualified six candidates, mainly hardliners, for the presidential election on June 28th and has bared leading reformists and moderates for the second consecutive poll. The outcome of the election is unlikely to bring about any significant changes in Iran's policies, particularly in terms of its relationship with the West. The focus will likely be on economic issues and how the new government approaches engagement with Western countries. 📍With hardliners expected to dominate the election, there may be little room for significant shifts in policy direction. Ultimately, the supreme leader and his close advisors will continue to hold the most influence over decision-making in Iran.

This is concerning: A report from the National Security and Intelligence Committee of Parliamentarians (NSICOP) reveals that some Canadian politicians are collaborating with foreign governments to advance their own interests, leading to potential illegal behavior. The report highlights instances of parliamentarians receiving support from foreign missions, accepting funds or benefits, providing privileged information to foreign officials, and improperly influencing Parliamentary colleagues. NSICOP cites concerns about the slow response by the Canadian government to threats from countries like China and India targeting Canada's democratic process with interference. The report recommends reforms to address foreign interference, including extending Elections Canada's jurisdiction and introducing amendments to Canadian law. The Trudeau government recently introduced legislation, Bill C-70, to address some of these recommendations.

Nandi-Ndaitwah won 57% of the presidential vote, outpacing opposition leader Panduleni Itula of the Independent Patriots for Change (IPC), who garnered 25.5%. However, SWAPO's parliamentary support declined to 53%, down from 65% in 2019. Securing 20% of the parliamentary vote, the IPC has strengthened its role as a key opposition party. Analysts suggest that Nandi-Ndaitwah’s popularity may have eclipsed growing public discontent with SWAPO, as voters prioritised her leadership qualities over party affiliation. Her presidency signals a potential shift in how Namibians approach governance, blending continuity with the promise of reform. Subscribe to our newsletter here: https://lnkd.in/dHV8Dtng

🔴 🔴 🔴 Attention American Pakistanis and anyone else who cares about democracy in Pakistan and Imran Khan as a leader. First Pakistan Global is joining with Just Foreign Policy to share news of the most significant Congressional action in response to the stolen election yet. House Reps. Casar (TX) and Wild (PA) are leading a letter calling on the US to demand a credible, transparent investigation into the rigging allegations before recognizing the election. The letter also calls for the US to work to free political prisoners and hold accountable those who engaged in anti-democratic actions and human rights abuses. This is urgent -- the letter will likely close in the coming days, before a new government is finalized in Pakistan. We need everyone who cares about democracy in Pakistan to ensure that their Representatives in the House and Senate sign this letter. https://lnkd.in/ex5gSbiR #pakistanelections #pakistanelections2024 #pakistanelection #pakistanelection2024 #USCongressBill #DemocracyUnderThreat #ImranKhanPTI

August witnessed anti-Muslim and anti-immigrants riots across the UK, sparked by misinformation about the perpetrator of the murder of 3 young girls. This came amidst wider Islamophobia in general election campaign narratives and in political parties. Muslims also remain the most targeted group in religiously aggravated hate crimes. Joining me on Experts’ Dispatch to discuss Islamophobia in the UK was Professor Tahir Abbas, who spoke about the following: - The definition of Islamophobia, of which there remains no official one in the UK - The root causes of the riots beyond the misinformation, which extend to discontent with poverty, policing and housing - Whether things will be different under the new Labour govt, after failures under successive Tory govts, and what strategies should be employed to tackle Islamophobia Watch the full video here: youtu.be/mpmYIjh1VdU

The recent presidential election in Iran, marked by historically low voter turnout and pervasive public rejection, underscores the profound disillusionment and frustration coursing through society. Masoud Pezeshkian, while touted by some as a reformist, epitomizes the paradox of Tehran’s politics, where the facade of change masks a deeply entrenched crisis of survival. Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei’s increasingly tenuous grip on power is evident as he navigates a regime riddled with internal strife, economic challenges and a society that has rejected his regime in its entirety. This election, far from heralding stabilization, portends a tumultuous period ahead for Khamenei’s leadership.

Sina toossi posted on X: Editor-in-chief of the reformist Iranian newspaper @Hammihanonline Mohammad Javad Ruh on Iran's upcoming presidential election & its potential impact on negotiations with the US: "If the political system has decided to resume negotiations with the U.S. and sees this as the way to deal with Trump, naturally, the signals and possible messages given to some key candidates, the qualification approvals, and the election debate atmosphere will be shaped to bring a president and government suitable for this negotiation approach, similar to what happened in the 2013 election, leading to Rouhani's rise to power. With this scenario, the likelihood of candidates like Ali Larijani entering the election scene and winning increases."

What I wonder is will anyone be punished? Not just not re-elected, but people have not upheld their oaths or sworn duties. Either wilful blindness, negligence, or criminal acts have occurred. You’d think some investigation would occur some where at some point… no? It seems odd that so much can go wrong and we just shrug our shoulders before moving on. #duty #obligation #responsibility #wwjd #what #anyonethere #? #accountability #responsibility #oath #affirm #sworn #authority #positionofauthority #federal #government #foreigninfluence #inquiry #investigation
Good to see this finally being explored in daylight. My overall thought is that if the bar for action is whether or not an election outcome is likely to be changed because of foreign interference, then the bar is much too high. Once it’s that prevalent, we’re in serious trouble. (Noting that Conservatives feel that happened in some ridings). https://lnkd.in/gcH-QZnp

The idea that foreign interference intelligence information is being used as a measuring stick for whether the outcome of an election wasn’t “true” is unrealistic. Once any form of foreign interference is detected it demonstrates there are areas being manipulated by outside state or non state actors and action needs to be taken ASAP. The expectation that the Canadian Intelligence Community can detect or deter (using TRMs) all Foreign Interference is both naive and highly problematic. This inquiry needs to be a wake up call for all Canadian citizens and political parties that enough hasn’t and isn’t being done to effectively combat FI.
