It is reported that buildings generate 39 per cent of annual global greenhouse gas emissions – daily operations producing 28 per cent with the remaining 11% coming from building materials and construction processes.1 Incorporating sustainable practices into building design, construction, and maintenance can go a long way to reduce carbon emissions and the effects of climate change. How can you judge the level of sustainability of green buildings in order to compare them? Who benefits financially from green buildings? And is it possible to quantify the financial benefit of investing in green buildings?

#Decarbonization is a complex problem. For those responsible for several buildings, such as offices, schools, universities, banks, retail, residential, healthcare, or storage facilities, the carbon emissions of these buildings are an immediate issue. Addressing these carbon emissions is increasingly shifting from an aspiration to a necessity in business planning. Growing regulatory pressures in different states, countries, and regions around the world will compel companies to act. To tackle this complex problem, we specialize in portfolio decarbonization, the strategic assessment and planning for a collection of properties to reduce carbon emissions at scale, align with capital planning and financial goals, and improve the comfort and well-being of occupants. Every company that takes steps to decarbonize its portfolio is doing its part to protect the planet for future generations and reduce the harmful impacts of global warming. There is no time like the present to take action. This week marks the launch of the UK's first cross-industry Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard – it’s a hugely significant milestone for the future of sustainable building in the country. The pilot standard enables the construction industry to confidently demonstrate that buildings, and building projects, are truly Net Zero and aligned with the UK’s carbon reduction goals. As a provider of automated smart building solutions that reduce buildings’ operational carbon emissions, we’re excited at Priva to see how this pilot develops. Up until now, there has been no single agreed definition of a ‘Net Zero Building’ for the industry to use. This standard, which has been drafted by a cross-industry group led by the UK Green Building Council, should now bring clarity to the meaning of Net Zero in the sector. Key Highlights: ✅ The Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard is free to access. ✅ It is applicable to retrofit projects and new build across all major sectors, except for infrastructure. ✅ It offers a unified, technical approach to avoid misleading net-zero claims. ✅ Policymakers can also rely on this standard for defining net zero in legislation. The standard also lays out clear limits, targets, and reporting guidelines —encouraging everyone in the built environment to engage and start preparing for Net Zero verification. You can find out more about, and download, the standard here: https://lnkd.in/eqZm4Ni4 UK NZC Buildings Standard #NetZero #Sustainability #Construction #BuiltEnvironment #SmartBuildings

Sustainability Trends in U.S. Real Estate 2024 🌿 As the landscape evolves, the SEC's 2024 climate disclosure rules are setting new standards, mandating the reporting of climate risks and emissions. This shift is driving a notable transition towards sustainable building materials like green concrete and timber, which can reduce construction emissions by 20-30%. Moreover, real estate investments are increasingly prioritizing resilience measures to mitigate the impact of extreme weather events. 👉 Swipe right to learn more

*Coming this month* - Major Milestone in the Fight Against Greenwashing: The UK Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard is Coming! 🚀🌍 The UK's first cross-industry Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard is set to launch its Pilot Version in the final week of September, bringing clear, unified guidelines for net-zero requirements across all major building types based on a 1.5°C climate trajectory. Leading organisation, including BBP, BRE, the Carbon Trust, CIBSE, IStructE, LETI, RIBA, RICS, and UKGBC, have united to create this essential standard, putting an end to inconsistent claims and greenwashing in the building industry 🏗️ For too long, developers have marketed buildings as “net zero” without proper verification. This standard provides a single, agreed methodology to prove that built assets are genuinely net zero carbon, ensuring alignment with our nation’s climate goals. Launching the Pilot Version in September marks a key step toward mitigating greenwashing, ensuring real climate action, and giving industry professionals the tools to deliver on their net-zero promises 💚 Together, we’re building a sustainable and transparent future in UK building standards! Embodied carbon isn’t something people hear much about outside of sustainability circles. But as the building industry makes progress in using energy more efficiently, it's a concept we need to make part of the larger conversation. Mike Swenson, Director of Sustainability at Suffolk, provides a roundup worth the read about how about cities and states across the country are thinking about this important challenge.

Decarbonizing the Built Environment: Key Insights from our Climate Group NYC Climate Week Event Today, we had the opportunity to host a powerful discussion on how we can work to decarbonize the built environment—an urgent and complex challenge facing the construction industry. Our Co-founder and CEO, Ben Christensen kicked us off with a key question to group: “If you had $100 million to decarbonize the built environment, how would you allocate it?” The conversation, featuring insights from Julia Gisewite, LEED AP, WELL AP, Chief Sustainability Officer at Turner Construction Company and Jack Rusk, Cofounder at C.Scale. Here are our 5 key takeaways on the problem and the huge opportunity ahead of us: 1️⃣ Early decision-making is essential—The importance of making sustainable choices early in the build project lifecycle cannot be overstated. Missed opportunities can be hard to recover later. 2️⃣ Data-driven supply chains—With $1.3 trillion spent annually on construction materials, the potential for emissions reductions through smarter, data-driven decisions is enormous. 3️⃣ Cost and timeline parity—Sustainable materials need to match traditional options in both cost and timing for widespread adoption. 4️⃣ The power of policy—Compliance is a powerful driver of change. Real-time data on materials can streamline compliance and prevent costly mistakes. 5️⃣ Circular economy opportunities—By using waste materials in construction, we not only reduce waste but also create a new economy that benefits both people and the planet. At Cambium, we commit every day to bringing innovative solutions like Carbon Smart Wood™ and simplified supply chains to life to drive the change needed in our industry. Thanks to everyone who showed up today. The solutions happen when we connect the dots across industry and today was an exciting moment for that. Read more on the discussion over at https://lnkd.in/e8Vsfi38 And a huge thank you to J.M. Kaplan Fund for always being the most gracious hosts. #Decarbonization #Sustainability #CarbonSmart #ConstructionInnovation #ClimateAction
