I am really glad that this conversation is becoming more mainstream, not in ways that tell women to "lean in" and do more and expect more of themselves, but in ways that acknowledge that the system stacks the cards against mothers and against parents; and not in ways that hide motherhood, but in ways that make motherhood central to the change. There wasn't any amount of leaning in that was going to offset the impact of a work-first and work-only culture. There wasn't any amount of learning in that was going to offset the impact of prohibitive child care cost. No matter what the day holds, working parents start each one juggling caring for their kids while working. In meetings, I constantly hear statements like, "I have a hard stop to get my kids off the bus," "school is closed/early release today," and "I'll be offline for a school performance/field trip/ceremony." I'm grateful to work remotely for a company that allows flex schedules and created an ERG for parents and caregivers. It's the best possible environment for a working parent, but we must do better.
